I feel like the game's descending sub count and (probably) lower mogstation sales as a result, caused some shareholder to demand an explanation/scapegoat, and so they blamed the biggest mod on their radar, issued a C&D, and called it a day. Then people got pissed and began review bombing them on Steam, so they drafted this long winded letter to try and appease folks and provide these weird "definitely not profit driven" motives, and act like they were just out here doin' it for some sensitive raider that doesn't exist. And of course the ideological inconsistencies are full on display: like OP mentioned, if player feelings, character tracking, and forcing people to partake in something they don't want are such a big deal, then yeah, there should be an fflogs discussion. But there won't be, because none of those things actually matter to anyone. At the end of the day, fflogs keeps the competitive ones playing, and there's no way to argue that it negatively impacts the cash shop, so even though it intersects with a lot of the problems mentioned in that dev letter, it won't be touched or discussed.

Just think about it from a profit motive. They're a company, after all. Once you look at it from a moneymaking standpoint, the inconsistencies in logic fade away and everything stops seeming so disjointed and confusing. Like, they literally killed a thing people used to enjoy outfits together, and then dropped a cash shop sale a week later, lol. They're not interested in raider feelings; they just want your money and feel like they haven't gotten enough of it lately. Even in that same letter, he hints at "toooootally not wanting to raise sub rates," but that they will have to if revenue is down and then subtly blames mods for it lol. Legit, people can waste time arguing about what he "really" meant all they want, but I'd bet you $20 that the C&D was reactionary and all of this is just more reactionary damage control.

Yeah the director's stance on modding has been the same from the start nothing profit driven on that however you hit it on the head

here's things they could have done to not be so hard pressed about cost.

    1. They would have done forked tower right at the start.

    2. They wouldn't have had the ninja gear with casting speed.

    3. The trial they said would drop two totems would have dropped 2 totems out the gate no need for emergency maintenances.

    4. The cash shop that they want us to buy from would only vend account wide items

    5. 7.1 - .3 wouldn't have been cleaning up the mess that was 7.0 dawntrail.

    6. punishments would have been handed out to individual tos breakers that were advertising mare and ERP clubs in shout chat

and even that would have saved them the so many people dropping 270k people lets say 30k left the game because mare that's 420k you lost because again poor management riound it down for fees etx so square lost 400k that is a lot of money to lose over wanting people to buy cash shop items they were getting at least 3million from mare users and they kicked the nest.

in the end The corp has wasted money on poor projects like FF16 and 7 remake so they turn around and say it is the mod communitie's fault for appearing to themselves in cash shop items the very few people that would do such things pretty sure a lot of those modders were taking the stuff off more than wearing vanilla cash shop outfits. The people that did not buy the cash shop items wouldn't have bought them anyway modders fault seems like such a weird cop out.

no I won't make any losing bets with you I may need the 20 for the sub they are trying to go up on lolol

to square you don't get to missmanage funds and then ask for money the tos breakers became a thing because your game does not have much customization

For real, where the heck is the budget to finish Viera/Hroth hats.
I'm honestly expecting a scenario in the future at the launch of 8.0 that is like "Sorry, we didn't think of adding skill/sound effects to our new class beyond level 40 because of budget issues, we'll consider to add most of them by 8.55 MAYBE - btw new mogstation items !"
