A good friend was banned for RMT

I know that RMT runs rampant in a lot of games. All SE can do is try and keep it to a minimum.

That said, did your friend’s account get compromised? I ask this since no information to give us a better idea on why your friend’s account was banned. Some RMT sites will find ways to compromise accounts and use them in their “Gold Selling” schemes. Such an account can get banned. I would ask your friend if they got a suspicious link while in game and if they used it. If not, then I would petition for SE to unban their account.

This game can provide solace when real life is not so great. We, the players, just have to stay safe when doing so.

I was going to say, this friend can't be doing too bad for themselves if they were able to afford buying oodles of gil, or were profiting from selling it, so I'm less sympathetic.

FAFO at its finest, and after the whole Mare thing, you'd think people would be even more cautious about doing ToS-breaking things with that much blood in the water.

I used to be CS/QA for a cell phone game and one of my jobs was banning people. I have less sympathy than most because these people would break rules, brag about breaking rules in their chats (that we could most certainly read because we developed the game). We would give them a warning if applicable, and they would taunt us or brag to their friends about being warned and talked about how we won't actually do anything in world chat.
Then, when I banned them, they would send a ticket in, crying about it. "It wasn't me! I was hacked! My brother had my phone!" but all the proof was in their chat logs and account activity. Then they anger part would kick in and they'd wish cancer and death to us or our families. Made me feel better about banning them, tbh.

I know that this post probably would get a lot of hate but a good friend was recently permanently banned for RMT as a first time offender even though he knows of others who only got temporary ban instead. This game has been the main outlet that he uses to cope with his current less than ideal IRL situation so he is quite depressed right now because of the ban. I guess the purpose of this post is that we want to know if anyone has more insight of why some people are perma ban and some are just given a temp ban with a warning.

If they didn't want a ban for engaging in RMT, then they shouldn't have engaged in RMT. If their account was compromised then they should reach out to SE staff to get it sorted out. Their help desk is relatively responsive and willing to help, last I checked. If it was on your friend, FAFO I guess.

He did an RMT and got what he deserves. If you find it hard to farm gil then I don't know what to say.

Either way, I have friends who did RMT a lot and never got banned. They did get questioned by GM but they decided that they can keep the gil. I don't know how but it seems it goes if the GM has great day or a bad one.

Are you seriously expecting people to show empathy for someone doing a bannable offense that was well deserved?

And it's honestly quite unhealthy that you show empathy for someone who breaks the rules.

Yes absolutely empathy is good because one day you'll need it yourselves.
Here we see a person that has lost time off their life that is not a good thing deserved or not.

In what world are we objecting to being rightfully punished for illicit activities because some people get a slap on the wrist? I'm sorry your friend is in a rough place, but they broke the rules. You don't get to break the rules then complain about it. That's not how the world works. Don't get caught next time.

You really aren't getting it. You're the type of person that would show empathy to a drug dealer after he got busted despite him ruining his own life and possibly the lives of others. You know what he did was very wrong, but you still show empathy simply because it doesn't affect you.
