There's a new interview with Yoshi-P from gamescom and one of the questions was regarding future PS4 support. Square Enix and Sony have been working together to support the hardware for as long as possible but Sony are near the limit for what they'll do in order to keep the game running. While this doesn't confirm if PS4 support will be dropped with the release of 8.0, it's a sign that the end might be near.

Some games have recently dropped PS4 support altogether. Can we expect FF14 to still support PS4 for the next expansion, at least 8.0 till the 8.5 series?

My basic stance is that I do want to continue supporting hardware which has grown old. But I do have one concern, and that's regarding the OS of the PlayStation 4, and this is regarding the hardware regulations which were made by Sony. These regulations are related to the limit of the data, and because there's that limit of the data, well, we are continually incorporating updates for Final Fantasy 14 and we are now approaching that limit. And so for this limit that's in place, we have been asking Sony Interactive Entertainment from our side to increase that just for Final Fantasy 14, and they have kindly been doing that so far. But they've told us now that they are also reaching their limits.

So I will repeat myself: I do want to provide support for platforms as long as possible. However, there will eventually come a time when the hardware is at its limits in terms of its technology, and at that point in time we would have to provide an end to the service on that hardware. But I will be sure to provide clear reasoning for that decision when I communicate it to the players.

It's good that they're at least providing a bit of warning with a messaging like this. If 8.0 was intended, I'm sure he would have just said it, since it's already in production. But it's definitely not going to be all the way out to 10.0 like I was saying on the other page, since the wording indicates they're heading for an off-ramp sooner than later. So, I'd probably guess 9.0

Either way, whatever point 0; PS4 players that have been holding out now have a clear message to start saving up.

At this point, since we're only 2~3 years out from the PS6 now, I'd suggest PS4 console players wait it out for that, instead of running to the PS5, so you can be future-proofed when the inevitable PS5 EOS date comes.

SE likes to wait as long as possible to announce anything important to the players so they'll probably say something at fanfest at the earliest. (for reference, PS3 was dropped for Stormblood and the official post is dated after fanfest though I don't recall if they mentioned it during fanfest or not since I didn't go to that one and it wasn't streamed for free).

In my group for doing min ilvl content we have a member on PS4 Pro he said it was struggling when we were playing this past weekend actually, he has an Xbox Series S though so he'll probably just buy a license for that since it's on sale at the moment rather than buying a PS5.

You're not going to get years worth of notice, PS3 being dropped was at the fanfest before Stormblood, new pc requirements was at the fanfest before Dawntrail. Same with Xbox release.

The big questions with that is how unreasonably priced is the PS6 going to be and will it even be available in stores... Since PS5 launch was one hell of a thing.

I wouldn't exactly call the prices unreasonble when the consoles are still selling tens of millions of unit each year. The industry has changed and hardware prices are just higher across the board. Unfortunately this means some people have been priced out of the market and won't be able to keep playing FFXIV in the future.

If I had to make a guess for the PS6, I'd say $600-700 USD. The PS5 launched at roughly the same price as the PS4 Pro which Microsoft matched with the Xbox Series X and One X pricing.

    All true and good points.

Yeah, I remember getting my PS5 at launch, whew! That was a mess. Though, I put that on covid and lockdowns, creating the big-time shortage on chips and components causing that. Even for console launch shortages, especially PlayStation shortages, that's an outlier. I wouldn't expect the PlayStation 6 to have to deal with anything like that, unless the console launch year also comes with another major pandemic.

The main concern, as you mentioned, is the price. (Though I personally don't expect it to be too far and ahead of the PS5 Pro or anything, tbh)

But yeah, all great points you three.

Bigger questions. Will it have any good games or just a bunch of 80+ dollar AAA slop?

Firstly I wouldn't be surprised if it's late 2028/early 2029 and as for games I can see them being 90+ lol

    At launch? Doubtful.

But gems like Expedition 33 caught a lot of us by surprise, so who knows.
