I wonder if the visuals are a relic of ARR, where gathering nodes might be in the middle of a FATE or somesuch, and thus, it would have been helpful to signal to other players that you're quietly there at a gathering node. (Imagine someone dropping an AoE on you thinking that you're a combat class and thus would survive...)
