I would have agreed with this sentiment had Living Memory not been only a quarter of the expansion's content. Three-quarters of it was about the rite of succession, which made Living Memory feel like an afterthought. So, the theme of letting go and dying was not explored in-depth because the whole area felt rushed.
Look there was plenty of issues to be discussed here with the villain Zorall ja and Wuk Lamat, the lack of focusing more on Krile /Erenvile ect. however, I think the majority of the player base didn't quite understand the concept of the overall story. If endwalker was a story about what it means to live and the joy of life then Dawntrail was a story of what it means to let go and die. This story is really turning into a gripping saga of the concept of life and death and most people who are college age and younger than me have not experienced great loss of someone they love and might have missed the deep meaning of the regulators or turning off the terminals in living memory. Overall I think the story is finally fleshing out with 7.2 and I am so hyped for 7.3!

Repeating a reply I posted in another thread, but it's just as relevant to this discussion.
I've always disagreed with this narrative from many in the community that Dawntrail was the most catastrophic piece of fiction ever produced in gaming.
I've always said I enjoyed it - it wasn't my favourite expansion (Endwalker takes that spot for me, personally) but I did nonetheless enjoy my initial playthrough and didn't reflect on the negative aspects of it until I'd completed 7.0. In fact, one element I've found difficult is how easy it is to feel gaslit (through the negativity) into thinking the elements I enjoyed were not as good as I remember.
I guess it helps that I don't view Wuk Lamat as negatively as most forumites too - there was only one instance in the story where her presence annoyed me, and that was the Queen Eternal fight - I won't elaborate on that, as I've expressed my thoughts on that matter numerous times in numerous threads and am not going to re-tread that ground .
Again, it didn't manage to make me feel the way Endwalker and Shadowbringers made me feel - but I did enjoy it.
You're welcomed to have an opinion, but this isn't really a case of "People don't understand the true meaning of the story", there is no true or deeper meaning to the story. I am willing to accept there is some moral implication with Living Memory, obviously, or the whole conundrum of "Are they really alive", but 88 of the other quests not associated really had no deeper meaning, so the overall story is still pretty bad, and generally had very little meaning to it... I am just not really all that willing to say "The point of the story was x, when less than 1/5 of the story actually went into said topic or implication.
Graphic updates are good, but still issues around it, and graphic update is really an inevitability for how dated this game looked, in combination with the goal of "10 year plan".
Battle content? On a normal mode level I am going to disagree, it's the same thing, expansion-after-expansion, the only difference being is that they are now slightly faster. Beyond that, it's just the same as always, and to be honest, this game just has so much that it has abandoned, that if you aren't doing battle content, then it's just a generally lousy experience all around.

Aaaaand another one. You know, you can say you enjoyed something without insulting the intelligence or emotional maturity of people who didn't enjoy it. At least you're not calling us transphobic. No, I'm 31 and have experienced plenty of loss. It was by far the most poorly written, terribly paced, shallow story yet, all with an insufferable lead surrounded by a cast of side characters stripped of almost all of their personality and agency in my opinion (I could go on). And someone from bluesky didn't even tell me to think that /s...however, I think the majority of the player base didn't quite understand the concept of the overall story. Has anyone noticed that whenever someone says DT’s battle content is such a step up it’s that it’s always a step up from EW which most people agreed was pretty terrible outside a narrow band of the playerbase (mostly melees)
It’s like they dug themselves a hole, fell into it then climbed back out and now people are acting like it’s a grand achievement

What ? Where did bluesky even come into the equation and I am so confused why you would bring up transphobic stuff as if it is even a thing I was thinking about lol. I wish you the best day brother and have a good one!Aaaaand another one. I was not trying to insult anyone and its perfectly fine to not like the story. ^_^ if you took it offensively it was not meant to be a bad faith take.Aaaaand another one. One of the things that irked my appreciation for the MSQ was probably the biggest deal: Krile's background and her story arc of trying to find her origins took a major backseat to this expansion. See, I didn't have an issue with Wuk Lamat at all - I think she's a cute character. However, what bothered me, besides the writing, was the excessive focus on a single character. I understand that this story was intended to bridge the gaps of her nation and self-discovery, but she received more character development time than a long-time favourite of many players who follow the story.the lack of focusing more on Krile /Erenvile ect. however, I think the majority of the player base didn't quite understand the concept of the overall story. I have other gripes, but this one bothered me the most. Krile got a massive story origin shaft.
This is just my own opinion. You are allowed to have a favourite expansion/storyline despite disagreements others may have. Don't let others say you're wrong for that being your favourite.

Likewise .I have enjoyed dawntrail
