Except that is a general problem with text chat in general that extends to anywhere that includes this, even WoW. As text actually can be really terrible at conveying things. Unless you make it blatant that it is a joke, the reader really only have two options on how to interpret what you say:

    1) Take the given text at face value.
    or
    2) Assume they have to be joking as why type that?

After all, am I joking or not when I say: "Everyone ready to feed?"
And you get no extra context.

Which rotates round to taken personally, be it professional victim, persecution complex, you have to spell out and triple think everything you say in this game because of people who are looking for an excuse to feel bad that day.

It's less about being respectful and more about walking on eggshells to avoid hurting fragile egos.
I agree that a lot of people struggle with nuance, but from my perspective the ones struggling with it are often the ones getting warned because they didn't anticipate that their words would negatively impact a fellow player, or alternatively did not care for their fellow player.

If the lack of an emoji leads to a miscommunication, then at the end of the day, it's on the person who wrote it for not being crystal clear about their intentions.

Counterpoint: Trash talking and joking do have their limits and you have to just deal with it. Maybe a person thinks their joke or whatever is innocent and everyone around them is thin-skinned who gets offended, but really they got under someones skin and that results in repercussions for what they said. After all, lets go look at what the wow community has to say on a matter similar to this where its open world pvp

    Turns out its just:
    same story, different game.

Well, l have learned my lessons. Saying random things can get you in trouble because if someone takes it the wrong way, That's "emotional damage". So, this game expects you to be quiet and nonsocial. I won't say a thing even if someone is actually asking for help.

The ironic part is that you only need to do the first part to avoid trouble

I love how everyone is falling for your bait.

Not in frontline. Not playing the game will also get you in trouble.

I really don't think this issue is oversensitivity or professional victimhood.

Given that the phrase "you are quite good" has a completely different meaning in US and British English (the latter only being clear with vocal inflection), I don't think it's surprising that in pools with players with a variety of native languages that nuance gets lost.

I like how OP said he had no idea, except he 100% pointed out the very moment he got the warning during FL multiple times.

Anyways, I've been playing FFXIV for a decade, and I've talked with total strangers in my party during rous, at hubs, shouts, raids, PVP, and even in NN since I became a mentor a few months ago. So far, no one has ever reported me.

Just be polite and respectful towards your fellow FFXIV players. If in doubt, remain silent and consider leaving if possible.
