Its only SOME new hats, not all. Also, "we know everyone is mad so we finally did this basic thing modders did years ago" is wild.

Modders are irrelevant to console players.
If you want to celebrate without anybody raising up issues with FFXIV. Try the FFXIV main reddit. They actively delete "negative" threads and you can fully roleplay "There is no war in ba sing se" over there.
I do wish they would've given us a preview on more hats. I can imagine alot of hats will have the ears clipping in really weird ways which is obviously why they put the toggle there with the option to remove hats. I have not seen the m*d so Idk how the m*dder did with adjusting the ears to fit better. To not fix the placement of the ears will most likely lead to alt of hats not actually being an option to wear anyway without having the ears disappear.
I would've liked to have the option to move the ears to a better position or have them folded down cutely or something. But...that is ofcourse a dream.
That's true but then there's also
"hey our community is really mad and actually leaving, quick lets shoehorn out this thing that we should have had ready on launch."
to which the response by some people is "omg yes this is so awesome, I mean they aren't fitted, I paid for this character, things clip, and the character types have been out over a decade, but wow this is so amazing, this game is the best. People need to stop complaining at least we finally got hats."
People are pissed and they deserve to be, and on the opposite side of that are people who are toxically positive (to which they have the right too tbh) and everyone in between. It is honestly just frustrating seeing this community over the last 10 years i've been playing never collectively standing up for themselves, when this could literally be the best product on the market.
And ya know I never played wow much but I did play OSRS. The things i can respect about those communities is that they seem to hold their dev teams and parent company accountable. Both WOW and OSRS might have luls of getting poor development or corporate concocted greedy ideas, but in lock step they speak their mind and pull their money out to show they aren't playing. It's no wonder both games which are way older than FFXIV usually get what they want and have larger player bases. I mean ffs WOW in particular seems to have pulled a complete 180. Or at least that's the sentiment I gather.
I just wish that this community could be collectively honest and not downplay anything. The devs aren't our friends. Yoshi P. isn't our friend. SE definitely isn't our friend. They're siphoning money from us and the expectation is that they are supposed to support the game properly to create an equal and balanced trade. Not nickle and dime us until things reach a boiling point. That's it really.
This is actually part of the problem. I don't think you actually care about individuals who are being mean because they don't like that others are having fun (which is wrong). I think you actually enjoy the slop you're fed, and what's worse is you voluntarily seek it out. Which in turn sends a signal to SE as a corporation that if there is enough people willing to send them the same amount of money for less, they will continue to do less. It literally devalues the content.

Glad the Hrothgars and Vieras have finally got some hats.
If you think this was a kneejerk reaction to anything and not a feature in development for a long time, I have some headlight fluid to sell you.
