    Repeating a duty: no rewards?

    Hello All

Am pretty new to the game and have a question related to duties.

Yesterday, I completed Castrum Meridianum (as a step of my MSQ). Today, I wanted to repeat it, so I went there, click on entrance, took a party of NPCs and off I go. I managed it a lot better than the first time, so I was pretty happy, but... I didn't get any rewards!?

So, my question is probably quite stupid but: When we repeat a duty, we don't get any rewards? Or what do I fail to understand?

Completing a duty multiple times by queueing directly for it provides no real benefit unless you are trying to farm an item inside that duty

Completing a duty by getting it in one of your roulettes provides a once per day benefit of extra rewards

As a healer main in this game for nigh on 14 years all I can say is that I’m tired. My role has been eroded of complexity and expression for 3 expansions. I’ve watched the tanks do my role for me for 2 expansions and my feedback and critiques continue to fall on deaf ears.

I have no idea who modern healers are designed for but I know now it’s not me. This is the first expansion I’m truly considering dropping the healer role and not returning, so if that was the goal- congratulations I guess

    Thank you!

Additional question: roulette duties, can we do them with NPCs too?

No. The whole point of roulette is to do it with other people, so the roulette fills you in to people who directly queue a certain dungeon to help them out

Oh... Will not dare to. Am too new, doing by far too many errors and lacking too many knowledges for now. I can't do that to others!

People don’t mind you making mistakes especially when you are new.

It’s good to get experience with other people, the higher you go the more you’ll run into instances where the duty support system can’t help you complete a required duty to progress the main story and the duty support system is rather rigid in how it’s designed to work with encounters, working with more flexible players is good experience

Your first time around, was it through msqroulette or from queueing specifically for Castrum? If it was the latter then your extra reward may have been the first time bonus.

People are a million times more chill about mistakes than you’d expect. I joke to my friends and say “this game is like the opposite of League of Legends.” Also you can die a lot without hindering the team as long as you’re not tank or healer. Just let your party know when it’s your first time in a duty.

It’s also good to play with people for the sake of seeing how people play. They’re a little different than the trusts (eg. humans use aoe attacks on the groups of enemies, tanks will grab two groups of enemies at a time, etc) And people can give you advice too.

On the other hand, if you never join a party how will you learn in the first place? Jumping in, maybe messing up, and learning from it, is all part of the experience.

People in this game tend to be very patient with new players. It's expected that new players don't know everything yet. The game actually announces at the start of a dungeon if someone in the party has never done it before, and combined with the new player sprout icon, it instantly tempers expectations. If you tell the party that you're new and ask if there's anything you should know about the dungeon of bosses or whatever, most people will be happy to answer.

While you may find dungeons challenging due to being new to the game, nobody actually cares about you making mistakes in them and the reasons for that are:
    1. Bosses do not have time limits. There are many dungeons where the entire party will die except the tank, and the tank solos the boss. If you die, the healer will usually just resurrect you. As a Summoner, you can resurrect others too!
    2. Bosses forewarn you of the attacks they are doing - such as with an orange circle, or a red indicator on the tank. These indicators are consistent throughout the game for the most part, so you get used to them and start to find dungeons easier over time.
    3. A single boss attack rarely kills you. It usually takes multiple hits. You can strategically get hit by things on purpose due to this.
    4. If your party die to an attack, it is usually obvious what you did wrong, so you all go back and try again. It is almost always the case that you kill it on the second try if you didn't on the first. Usually it gets killed on the first try, even if new players die.
    5. They get rewarded for helping a new player beat the dungeon.
    6. They get rewarded for completing their daily roulette (which matches them with players that queue directly for a dungeon).
    7. Because roulettes match you with people who direct queue (usually a first timer), people are used to there always being a first timer that makes mistakes. It's the norm, not the exception. They are expecting mistakes.
    8. They can see that you are a new player due to the sprout icon. This helps them to understand why you are making mistakes. Games without a sprout icon like this often get new players attacked because the other players do not know they are new... it transforms the game a lot you see, so now that they know you are new, they just want to help and teach you usually.
In contrast, challenging content in FFXIV (you may see them called raids in many games of this genre) are sidequests and you won't run into them if you just do the fireball icon quests. The raid content has time limits so your damage has to be good enough, deaths need to be minimal, and attacks can kill you (or the entire party) in 1 hit if done wrong in many cases. You won't run into content that hard in the story quests though, so there's nothing to worry about there. The story is intended to be beaten by retired people who don't understand computers, or people who aren't gamers and only play because their partner does.

The things that can help a lot are:
    1. Look at the cast bar on the boss. The moment the cast bar completes, it snapshots where you were standing at that moment. So if you were in a red circle the moment the cast bar completed, it will hit you, even if you subsequently run out of it. If you were out of it before the cast bar completed, it will not hit you. The animation usually happens after the cast, so if you are avoiding based on animation, it is likely far too late.
    2. Rearanging the /hudlayout can help. It is common to move the target bar, status effects and minimap near to the hotbar. The default version divides your concentration between top, bottom, left. You can change it so everything is either bottom or left.
    3. In /characterconfig you can set it to "Legacy Type" and disable "Activate standard type auto-fly/auto-dive". This is useful on a keyboard/mouse, because it makes it easier to run out of orange circles.
    4. Reducing others' battle effects is recommended so you can see what you are doing: /bfx self all /bfx party simple /bfx other off

My first question is: what rewards were expecting?

If you were thinking about gear or items, the dungeon in question doesn't drop those, so the only reward is the exp from the bosses which is still there even on repeat runs even with NPCs. So if you want to use it to gain exp, then feel free to continue doing so! Castrum M and the follow-up Praetorium are both this way which is different from other dungeons both before and after that do drop gear and items.
