Mechanically? Fair enough, I don't know enough about Runescape to argue that.
Narratively, but a narrative that would actually work in 14

The hero will only use the souls of those who are willing to lend their power to the hero via a form of ritual communication where the hero communicates with a well of souls not unlike the aetherial sea. And the number of souls they have willing to lend them power determines their strength

As a healer main in this game for nigh on 14 years all I can say is that I’m tired. My role has been eroded of complexity and expression for 3 expansions. I’ve watched the tanks do my role for me for 2 expansions and my feedback and critiques continue to fall on deaf ears.

I have no idea who modern healers are designed for but I know now it’s not me. This is the first expansion I’m truly considering dropping the healer role and not returning, so if that was the goal- congratulations I guess

Isn't this more or less the logic they use for RPR? WoL's Avatar isn't being forced to work with us, other than struggling with general Voidsent hunger urges, they are a pretty heroic individual, confirmed to be the Thirteenth's Reflection of Azem, who willingly shares their power with us and is happy with our current arrangement, which is a stark contrast to an evil Reaper like Zenos, who subjugated his Avatar against her will.
