Yeah this. FOMO is ultimately a player's choice, not an immutable law of nature.100%. Guild Wars 2 is a great example of FOMO-free rewards design.
That said, FOMO is something that you, as a player, fall prey to. I'm not going to act like it's not a predatory design philosophy, because it is, but the solution to it is to understand that it is meant to turn you into an addict so that you dread the idea of not playing the game, and thus keep your sub active and keep logging in every day. You just need to miss that one ephemeral reward you think you really care about to realize that missing it had no tangible negative impact on your life. That pretty effectively breaks the spell.
