I unsubbed considering that I barely see my friends online aside for some fun MSQ stuff I had with. Thought the treasure stuff with the weapon glam would have helped but nothing and this Chaotic raid nothing...
And the content I care is so many months away so what is the point wasting money.

Like genuinely the only thing looking forward are finishing the rest of the class at lv100 and rng Alliance roulette/Frontline because once in a while you get some fun banter and funny fights. (Joined a Rabanastre raid and seen for the first time next phase after the frog ads in Mateus and wiped, it was funny and then continued the rest normal).

My friend doesn't play that much anymore, ever since Throne and Liberty came out. She'd rather grind endlessly for hours there, as FFXIV's job design is so boring, she can't bring herself to login that much anymore. I had a 1,5 month break, recently resubbed like 3 days ago because there's still things I want to do in game, but also having started IT classes, in a way FFXIV provides me the "nothing too much to miss out on because patches come every 4 months".

I gave WoW a try and was kinda taken aback how well healers feel there. There's been other MMORPGs I've been trying but only FFXIV falls short in terms of combat and job design.

And because my friend no longer logs in, I'm back to being a lone wolf in the game.

    I’m in the same boat.
My static died, my friends don’t log in anymore since DT (since post EW some even) and I am the only one.

I actually keep thinking about trying out FFXI because the raid lit up my interest but I don’t know where to start or how good it is for a new player nowadays.

This game is really not meant to "no life" it, and yet we see people with complaint after complaint about the lack of content. They just don't want to do that. That's what the decision is. So you can continue complaining or literally use your time for something else. The devs don't want people to play until the point of becoming frustratingly exhausted. If you are not having fun, nobody is going to hate on you for leaving. That's the point of them saying that.
FF14 is SE's money horse, so "This is not a game meant to drop content every month" falls apart in itself, if it wants to retain good numbers it is definelty meant to drop content on a more regularly basis than "Ohhh maybe 3 to 3.5 months or even 4" what is this? This game is at a worse point than WoW which is hilarious. But who are we even kidding? CVXIV person doesn't even seem to realize whats wrong with the game themself.

"it doesn't seem like you enjoy ffxiv at all, so what even brought you to the game in the first place if you're not willing to engage with anything" By now the games content has been dry for 5 years little bro, what engagement do you mean???

I did give FFXI a try as part of my free trial. There's this tingle of nostalgia. Combat might be slow (and tons of menus everywhere) but I had great fun exploring it.

The problem is, they need 4 months for content, which most people will play through in one weekend. And then the next 4 months of content drought start again. This is something, they refuse to solve, it seems. You can also see it in the steam numbers. The player retention is very bad in Dawntrail. It is way worse than in Shadowbringers or Endwalker at the moment. Maybe they need a financial wake up call. And start to put money into FF14 instead of failed Crypto projects or bad games like Forspoken.

    Cheers

I think when it comes to most things that the developers try, I feel like they are largely creatively bankrupt, and/or directionally/strategically confused. - What I mean by this is from 1 expansion to the next, they don't seem to know what side of the fence they want to go for, or at the very least seem wholly incapable of balancing what they produce with the feedback they receive.

For what it's worth, I don't think there's a care in the world. If there were, they wouldn't need to be asking why peoples' friends are unsubbing or not playing the game.. I say this because if they cared they would have discovered the reason well over 4-5 years ago.
I'm only perma subbed because i don't want to lose my mansion and i'm financially stable enough to justify that
I still log in every day to make a bit of gil here and there but it's really not worth the sub price

How so? It's been the money horse without dropping content every month so how does that fall apart?

Game is losing popularity across all platforms as is, if they dont change anything I don't think there will be much of the playerbase left after 8.0 else than the hardcore fanboys, the erp-ers. Raiders and Grinders get that adrenaline somewhere else, Savage is dead with the current meta/system weeks after launch, Chaotic is already kinda dead.

Okay let me rephrase the issue with what you said.
You said the game is SE's money horse. This is true, in their MMO division at least.
You then said, "so "This is not a game meant to drop content every month" falls apart in itself".
I am wondering why that falls apart, because the game has never dropped content every month, and yet it became SE's money horse despite that. I would think that would imply the problem lies elsewhere. Perhaps in the quality of the content itself.
