I think you're confused about the mechanic then tbh. because it definitely doesn't lock in the hand position when you get the heavy. it locks in basically when the aoe appears.I reviewed some videos of it and noticed it appears where ever you are when it's at 1 second remaining. This is also when the Heavy debuff is applied. Then the AoE appears and disappears quickly. Overall it seems to be about 3 seconds, the standard timeframe they give for things. You can probably go based on the Heavy debuff being applied.
When I did it I didn't really understand that it changed to front/back and guessed it was a snapshot thing that was causing it to be inconsistent.
What I said was just based on the videos I looked at to see where the beginning of the AoE was. Maybe they had high ping. I just looked at another one with low ping and theirs seems to snapshot when the debuffs expire.
In any case, it shouldn't be a problem if players move in the correct direction when the countdown is almost up until after the AoE. It's more of a problem for wanting 100% uptime but that design philosophy led to Endwalker and its giant hitboxes.
