It would be nice if it had an item level of at least 5 so I could skip this process (even better would be if it had scaled stats up to its maximum level of 25, but that's a "shoot for the moon" scenario. this would be especially nice because I often use "equip recommended" to upgrade my gear but I have to deliberately exclude hats and cowls).

It's a very good idea for the Friendship Circlet, as the pre-order item Garlond Goggles, Moogle Cap and (Collectors edition) Helm of Light are actually ilvl11 and get to skip being forced to buy a Leather Eyepatch or Hempen Hat from big hat industries

While one could argue that these three other headpieces have stats, the racial starter gear also used to be ilvl1 until it was raised to ilvl5 (despite being statless) for presumably this purpose

This is a fantastic piece of evidence, thank you for bringing it up.

I believe the only worry for SE is that a new player, referred by RAF from the start, would miss out on the "how to buy and equip gear" tutorial. However, I think the equipping portion would be handled after acquiring the friendship circlet from the mailbox. As for the buying part, I am not sure. Each starting quests contains a portion wherein you visit the markets. While this is far outside of the scope of the original suggestion, it might be more engaging if you were asked to buy something from the markets after talking to the master of the markets.
