Yep, if everyone who cares and tries to hold SE accountable leaves, you’ll have an amazing time as they finally take the reins and bring their full vision - and all the monetization options they’ve been holding back - to FFXIV.
back in my day 1.0 was bad people didnt stay around and complain they really left thats why realm reborn happened, so must not be that bad if people still staying.
You’ll always have a core player base, just like back then. The big difference today is that if the game’s revenue dips, companies have far more ways to monetize and stay profitable, even with lower player counts, options that just weren’t viable in the past.
Here are a few possibilities Square Enix could consider:
- Increasing the sub cost.
- Pushing the online store more aggressively.
- Introducing P2W items, like a single-use buff that guarantees a coffer drop from a Savage fight.
- Adding market board access from anywhere—for a fee.
- Selling housing plots for IRL money to avoid demolition.
- Restricting duty access unless you pay extra.
- Limiting daily loot unless you pay to unlock more.
Now, I don’t think they’d ever go this far, because that would make them worse than even the most predatory F2P gacha games I’ve played, but you never know. They’ve got shareholders to keep happy, and if the money starts running out, some of these ideas might make their way into the game.
I know, I've been lurking around here and r/FFXIV. Fun times seeing critic drowned in positivity.

yep its too late now SE about to get that mobile game money.
If you remember 1.0 then you actually remember 1.17->1.23b which was basically “ARR is coming for the moment we are going to intimately listen to feedback both for short term features in dying legacy and long term features for ARR”
The transition from original legacy to yoshi p legacy to ARR worked specifically because they listened to the feedback of the people who stayed ad well as changed the direction of the game when people left. They didn’t just chance on ARR’s design after legacy failed
Oh nice I still have forum access for a little bit. Because I definitely wanted to say that that was a damn lie. It's a good thing the old forums are still up because you can go there now and see the discourse, not to mention the countless other forums that used to be active back then. Most of the people playing either came from WOW or FFXI and back then FFXI was more popular so people just went back to their respective games or moved on to other things. That said the ones that didn't leave stayed and held SE's feet to the fire. Without those people you wouldn't have a game. Sounds like you were one of the ladder.
