Not all issues or reportable offenses come in the form of direct and clear communication/language, e.g., emote or auto translate spamming can still fall under this. Also, the profanity filter does not, nor should it preclude or validate the use of profanities. People shouldn't really need to jump through xyz hoops just because some people feel the need to try and validate or normalize inappropriate behavior. This is how your opening paragraph comes across to me.

It is very very rare you would get banned for no actual reason at all. Most especially in the circumstance where a dispute has resulted in no change in penalty, and when the penalty ultimately results in a 10/20-d suspension

Also, if you need any specific information on the ban you would more than likely need to submit what is referred to as a DSAR request, in more often than not cases they are required to provide the information if it relates to you. My guess is GMs just don't have the remit to disclose that information regardless of how much prying is done.

It is pointless to ask for a list of what language you can and cannot use. Yes, the examples listed in the 'prohibited behavior' are not necessarily the clearest, but if you're specific you then run the issue that people will just try to evade by skirting around it, as opposed to trying to take the 'spirit' of it. They'd be there for days giving people a list of what constitutes prohibited behavior/language. The best you can do is read the appropriate guidelines, and be more concerned with the 'spirit' of the message than the examples themselves.

I casually said the 4-letter F word and someone reported it so I received an instant "final warning" that I'd be banned if I cursed again despite it being my first warning. I also said something very normal and polite about (a majority of) mentors on the forums and got a 10 day ban. mea culpa

Thing is, it's not my game, and it's not my forum, and if I wanna play the game and use the forum then I gotta abide by the rules set forth by the people who do own them or I don't get to play the game or post on the forum any more. Soooo...I do \o/ If you see someone say a bad word in ff14 and wanna ruin their day then you can report it, they'll get their account actioned. It's in the ToS (known as getting 3.3'd for language because of, well, part 3.3 in the ToS regarding objectionable language). It's a foreign concept in the west because we tend to use language that eastern countries consider incredibly rude and inconsiderate (like disagreeing with someone's opinion, trying to be helpful by telling someone what to do, and casually swearing), but if you wanna play the eastern game then you gotta conform to that cultural aspect of the ToS. It's Club Penguin rules because the game is listed for people aged 13+ even tho the only people who still play it are like 100 years old. If you don't then this is what you're going to see because the GM's are copy-paste machines and don't make decisions of their own (it's a checkbox. Did you check a box next to a line in the ToS? Ban):

In short: Be careful with how you conduct yourself because if not then they can and will boot you. Even a legacy account can get a perma ban for cursing. They don't care about the individual - we're all just a row on a corporate spreadsheet to them.

I got my first forum ban during the benchmark controversy when I said people who can't see a difference need better glasses, ahaha :'D. It must have really gotten under someone's skin.

That's the magic of 3.3

Objectionable language is so broad that it can apply to an immense number of situations. The deciding factor for 90% of the western playerbase keeping or losing their accounts is determined simply by whether or not they get reported for their manner of speech or not.
