The problem is people taking the "mentor" system 100x more seriously than the game even does. You all project what you think it should be instead of basing opinions in the reality of what it is. There's nothing wrong with it. The bar to entry is pretty low and mostly a factor of how long you have played the game than anything else. Not skill, not a "desire to teach." That's how it is set up as a reflection of the low expectations of a mentor which are 1)answer questions 2) be an example of good etiquette 3) invite people to NN. Nowhere in those responsibilities is to be skilled at the game, spend an entire lockout trying to teach the unteachable you happened to queue with 10 year old content or LARP as some kind of benevolent sage advisor to no one who asked. That's all bs the players invented in their minds. The mentor roulette has a purpose of backfilling extremes and other duties that would be impossible without it since they are not part of the normal roulette. Yeah some people spam it for the mount and I don't see the problem with that. It's there for a reason. Why should mentor roulette in particular have to exist and players are expected to do it for absolutely no reward other than personal satisfaction? Even the normal roulette has rewards. Stop projecting your headcanon about what a mentor is onto everyone else and we'd all be better off.
