It's easy to dunk against SE, especially given how unhappy people are regarding Dawntrail. However, DDoS attacks are fairly common. It's to be expected with a game this large and popular to be targeted often. There's also no way to completely stop these attacks. The most they can do is reduce the impact.

as someone in IT, then you would know how common the attacks can be and that there is very little that can be done to prevent them, only mitigate

regarding other games, I wouldn't know, FFXIV is the only MMO I've played in recent years outside of the handful of times I pop into GW2 to do WvW
otherwise I play singleplayer RPGs

I wouldn't have that knowledge nor do I have the interest in arguing about the subject
It isn't surprising that a big game gets DDoS'd
