FFXI?...at least I'm quite sure you could summon elementals in that game

you can summon elementals. but i said name one where you can only summon elementals. 11 was the only one that you summon worthless summons that you only use to let the mob beat the shit outof while you ran like a little bitch lol. oh and there only 1 single positive use was summoning theme for all of 5 seconds to do Elemental Siphon.

Honestly I'd prefer is SE had more fun with summons rather then "Summon powerful mob and let them fight while you back up heal" Maybe summons will take on an entirely different meaning and instead of summoning monsters you summon gear. I know it sounds kinda stupid but think about it, your fighting a strong monster and your pld goes down so you summon a titan armor and tank the boss while your party regroups, or you summon an aerial armor that gives you enhanced movement speed and faster attacks.

I know not exactly a typical summoner but would be an interesting approach, I mainly like to see summoner more intimate with their summons rather then seeing them as disposable pets<_<
