Why the housing system makes people quit and possibly not come back

They should

- align the the demolition timer on the patch length. They pretend to have the mentality "go play other game if you have nothing else to do", so prove it, a patch is 4 month long, so make it so you can keep your house if you resub once every 4 month for the patches.
- limit to one private house by account and server. every character from one account would have the same house (maybe add a chest to transfer stuffs from one character to another of the same account, but that's another discussion). Those that already have several house can keep them, but if they loose it, they cannot rebuy another on if they still have others.
- hunt for submarine farms (that's easier said than done, and a small part of the problem, but it has to be done, and house availability is only a small part of the reason they should hunt them down).
- make it so you can upgrade your the inside of your house for money (like you have small one, you can upgrade the inside to look like a medium one, and a medium into a big one), exterior wouldn't change, and would justify the interest of trying to go for the big houses anyway, while giving small houses a real interest.
- give us the "more space in houses and exterior" you promised us during the early DT conferences.

It wouldn't fix all the problems, but it would be a step in the right direction.

You've got this a bit wrong. You can own a total of 40 FC houses on a single account, so it's very likely they're paying 1 sub for 40 smalls over on Dynamis or something. You can get all 40 FCs onto a single account, today, and right now, so removing the grandfathering won't do anything. This is something Square knows about and allows.

On a related note, Smalls are pretty easy to get. There were 6 smalls with 0 or 1 entrants on Seraph this week. Someone said they've been trying for a house for years. Well, that person could have had 1 this week.

Well technically you can get 160 FC Houses in total per Account

A while ago they made it so players/FCs were only allowed to own one property. However, players who already owned multiple were still allowed to own them. These multi-landowning players and their plots of land are what was grandfathered in.

Dumbest garbage of all time, by the way. Any humane game dev would just take their stuff, throw them a few million gil for the inconvenience, and send them on their way so everyone is on an even playing field. But Square wouldn't do that, because the people still owning their multiple plots of land have been playing and paying their sub nonstop since the change was made...

It isn't just this. Grandfathered in is also older accounts housing does not ever expire. Some houses belong to players who haven't logged in for years and just sitting not being used because the player doesn't even play anymore. I bet whole wards would open up if they went through and checked these accounts.

FFXIV's housing system is so bad. It's literally just designed to keep subscriptions between patches.

Also remember: they had to intentionally re-add a lot of the floating glitches and stuff back in ShB due to complaints. They did this instead of just giving players more tools to decorate. The whole system is genuinely in maintenance mode for them it feels like.

There are plenty free houses, just buy a S house instead of trying to get a L/M House, they are limited and in my opinion every ward should only have 2 M Houses and 1 L House.

Its easier to complain about the housing because lets be real most people complaining here are complaining because they cant get a L/M House.

I have a large house. The system sucks and needs a major overhaul. We don't need a real life housing crisis simulator.

I'm not selfish enough to claim it's fine just because I "won."

Instanced is a terrible and just boring idea in general, the way FFXIV should work would be to keep its ward system that has been in the game since housing was created, and to instead just keep auto-adding ward until demand is filled.

It's really that simple.
