why does this game get DDoS so much?

Advertisement. The companies/groups/governments that provide ddos services can claim that they took down a game with 20million players. We're not the target, we're the ad.

"We took down a game from a AAA game studio in charge of one of the biggest MMOs on the market!" is a powerful headline to prospective buyers.

I wonder why XIV is always their target, and not arguably a bigger name like WoW? I browse their forums every now and have not ever seen anyone complaining about DDOSing.

Just what you're paying attention to perhaps? Do a quick Google search on Blizzard or WoW getting DDOS'd and you'll see plenty of times it's happened. Heck, Destiny 2 got taken down for practically an entire week straight last year with DDOS attacks. FFXIV just released its new expansion, so with most of the MMO world's "attention" focused on it, it makes sense that it would be the target of the month.

Blizzard's network and architecture is miles ahead for SE's. I don't particularly like Blizzard, but from a pure technical standpoint, they are miles ahead of Square Enix.

Honestly I remember back in MoP WoW got targetted pretty badly for no small amount of time. I always figured the DDOS efforts we see often now were a side effect of 14's growing popularity. This wasn't nearly as common during the early WoW migration.
