If you look at the 2.0 concept art you can plainly see they are going for a more fantasy approach and veering away from a lot of the realism. FF11 was the only ff to be so realistic and with 2.0 coming it may be the last one.
I don't really see what your point is?

Taking a more fantasy approach doesn't have to mean creating weapons and armor that look like plastic children's toys. In fact, the most well-respected entries in the fantasy genre have none of those.

And as I said, the art direction of FFXIV 1.0 was one of the very few things it did exceptionally well. Most people quite liked it. Changing it drastically is worthy of complaint, especially if it's a step backward.

And by the way, people absolutely should pass judgement before the final product is unveiled. It's called user feedback. It's what SE didn't listen to in the original beta, which is why we got a horribly developed game. If everyone waits until the "final product" to give feedback, it's too late for feedback to do anything.

Really people? Final fantasy known for realistic weapons?

    What?

    I don't even....
    What?

I can't even fathom where this info comes from...

There are no words to describe how much that doesn't make sense to me....
Final fantasy, MORE THAN ANY OTHER SERIES EVER is know for crazy weapons... over-exaggerated sizes...weird metals... Seriously?

In fact... Compared to the rest of the series... these weapons are tame...
    Let me refresh your memory

Sephiroth is like 6'2" and the blade of his sword is taller than he is...

I just can't imagine someone who is a fan of Final Fantasy complaining about overstated, oversized, fantasy weapons....
And for someone who has been here since day one... I LOVE IT...

I got so tired of boring Spathas, Gladius' and daggers. I LOVE where they're going with these new weapons...
And I'm even more excited because I know the videos are always low detail, 1280x720 res, medium textures using crap youtube compression.

Come 1.22... these will look INCREDIBLE....

I know it's a matter of preference... and if you personally don't like them, fine...

But don't try to manipulate the community into agreeing with you through lies. Final Fantasy has NEVER been in the business of boring, realistic weapons...

In terms of the particular art style... It makes sense that we would start to see more mechanical designs and more moving parts being that the grand companies are now heavily influenced by Cid, who comes straight from the Garlean Empire...

So these new weapons look great, they are in line with Final Fantasy's crazy weapon history, and they fit in with the lore and setting of the game....

You're posting images of weapons from the wrong art director. 12 and tactics weapons would be more appropriate.

So because we have the art director from 12, the weapons have to be MORE TAME than previous releases?

    I don't get that logic

While I actually quite like most of these weapons and I have said this once before back when the Ifrit weapons were first released, I think it bares repeating:

The biggest problem most people have with these weapons (I believe) isn't their style, but the internal world consistency - or lack there of. Every Final Fantasy game from I to XIII-2 has had it's own look and feel, but there was something each game (and, for that matter, every AAA game every produced) has had, internal consistency. It's an artistic style that dictates the rules that a world operates upon. The fact of the matter is, to many people - myself included - the world of FFXIV does not fit with the artistic style of the Ifrit and, to a lesser extent, GC and Garuda weapons have taken on.

Ramsey posted pictures of Cloud and Titus as counter-examples, but in a way, they are perfect examples of what is bothering many people. Cloud's giant sword had a very heavy, industrial feel to it that perfectly matched the oppressive industrial tone of the game. Meanwhile, Titus' sword made out of water has a sleek, fanciful feel that reflects the fanciful feel of the world.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with these weapons, or those dropped by Ifrit and Garuda. The problem is in their relationship with the current world. Erozea has a very feudal feel to it. The cities - particularly Limsa and Ul'dah - are artistically very realistic, while the environments feel like something you could really find outside your front door depending on where you live.

Personally, I think these weapons are a huge step forward. They have a style that reflects an Imperial influence while retaining traces of a fantasy feel. It also bares mentioning that when 2.0 hits, and the art style of the game likely shifts from the events in the 7th Umbral Era the that Ifrit and Garuda style weapons will likely fit in much better (those crystal landforms in the PDF in particular).
