I'm probably just getting to 100 on all my jobs to wait for 8.0. As interesting as the raid tier was, it alone will not carry my interests for the whole of DT and the MSQ of DT didn't foster any hope that the 7.X story is going to actually be any good.

Can't take a break because of auto-demo. Also, good (or at least passable) MMORPGs aren't exactly running around by the dozen at the moment.

If you're afraid of losing your house in a game you're not enjoying, maybe interrogate that. It's literally just a canvas to put decorations on, and you're paying rent for it in real dollars. If I ever come back, I will have forgotten any minute details about it anyway, and I can rebuild if I want to. It'd be more fun to rebuild, even.

Guild Wars 2 is phenomenal, just the mid-game of Core turns people off. Also the story isn't good (but it's completely optional, especially on alts), and it's not a raid sim. But the PvP, the WvW, the PvE at endgame are top tier. Easily the best 'contemporary' MMO by a country mile. I'd also be honored to get you started in FFXI (retail or Horizon)! The communities in both are actually really refreshingly active, social, helpful, and less "middle school mean girl" than FFXIV.

I've heard really good things about Albion Online as well.

My belief is that if you're not having fun with the game, don't play it. I've played WoW since vanilla and I pretty consistently took entire expansions off any time the game was going a direction I wasn't happy with. There's a literal mountain of other games people can be playing if they're not enjoying FF14. And even if you remove new games that just came out or are about to come out, I bet most of us have a significant backlog we haven't touched because we were playing FF14. I wasn't enjoying the latter half of Endwalker so I took time off and played a ton of amazing games instead. (Rise of the Ronin, Shadow of the Erdtree, FF7R, Stellar Blade, Lies of P, and Monster Hunter Stories were all great uses of my time) I came back for DT and I've been enjoying the fight design in DT, so I'm having fun again.

Excellent advice. I especially like the last bit, that at some point we'll all be left behind by the game. I am a decrepit 2.2 player and it hasn't lost me yet. I know it probably will at some point or something else will catch my interest more. But the most important thing is we should be enjoying what we're doing. Even if I have brief (sometimes not so brief) frustration over something like not being able to catch a fish or my static having trouble with a Savage floor, there's still enjoyment in the doing that is coming back to me as a player. If there's no enjoyment, the game is going to feel like a job, and that's the point someone may need to consider at least a break.

I can quit FFXIV any time that I want, I just don't want too!

Assuming you can get another house which is... a strong hypothesis.

I'm ploughing through the 80+ story atm in GW2, and I'm not totally convinced so far. I see many good things and systems, and many equally bad (or rather, too old) systems as well. Which I fear will not fixed because ANet is working on GW3 now

So yeah, i support this here. Take breaks from the game for how long its needet. For your own mental health and potential future enjoyment.
Also, adding to that XIV does very little FOMO things compared to other MMORPGS, and the timed events we have usually return and when they don't anymore, whatever you'd get may end at the mogstation.

I'm in a static and I intend to complete the raid tier with them, but we'll see what happens after we clear. I have a house, but if I sub every other month I could keep it while still paying half as much.

That said I have been actively trying to play other games in my free time, and I think it's been a good thing for sure. Stardew Valley ver1.6 has been a good time.

I'm debating taking a break partially for financial reasons, partially because the latter half of the MSQ didn't appeal to me but seems to be the way going forward for the game. I've got a personal house of each size plus a FC medium. I've got no problem letting go of my personal houses, or the medium if my friends with alts in the FC aren't interested in keeping it (they don't play those alts often).

The houses are just pixels. If I do take a break and then come back, I'll have the fun of restarting my housing adventures. And I do mean fun in the real sense, not a sarcastic sense. For me part of the fun in RPGs is starting from nothing and building my way up.
The raid logging for me keeps the game fresh, and I'm usually done with savage after 8 weeks, so its just resub every 4 months after I complete the 8 weeks. And idk who keeps themselves subbed for the MSQ, I mean, after beating the base game, you could unsub till 7.5 and experience ALL the content sans savage in a month.
