You know ... it's possible that it could be as simple as a money thing.
Looking at the usual cast of FF14, most of them have a star-tuck list of professional achievements. Think a few of them are involved in opera and one is even a actual singer? I doubt those talents come cheap. Anyone here played Baldur's Gate III? Even if one doesnt like the story or gameplay, but no one can say the Voice Acting of BG3 is anything less than world class. I think Larian did admit it did cost them an arm and a leg to hire all those VOs, but the CEO wouldn't have it any other way and the result spoke for itself. Like, seriously, you look at the VO credit of BG3 and you thought they were hiring for a Hollywood mega project.
We know the graphic update didn't come cheap, and there were rumor there were some friction between Yoshi and the board because the server upgrades he asked for cost so freaking much. It's quite possibles it leads to a budget compromise that opened the door for the the English director to make a point about getting a less than ideal candidate. WL's VO would have to be a completely new hire, and giving the absurd large amount of lines she, has couple with her status as the main character in a FF's tittle, a seasonal/well-proven candidate wouldn't come cheap. Like ... if someone like Laura Bailey knew she's casting for the main character with the most numerous lines ... I bet her agency would ask for a premium. On the other hand ... given such a role to a less than well-know candidate who are eager to jump at the chance getting such a big role ... that would give SE a lot more bargaining power wouldn't it?
So who know, just another point to think about beside the ... usual speculation and conspiracy. But I hope at least most people can agree whatever reason behind this particular hiring ... the reason wasn't due to competency or merit.
