[Feedback] Wuk Lamat's English Voice

Reminder to simply ignore posters who come in here every day to just stir up drama and argue with people. They're not acting in good faith and don't care about any reasons in this thread because we dare disrespect their queen.

i completely understand now. i wake up and see that it's devolved into absolute pigslop ethics discourse. i think people should keep things on track regarding the quality of voice acting rather than whiteknighting every time someone calls him for what he is. i am not going to mald if someone calls him a she, especially not if they bring strong argument and evidence to the table of a poor job. just like i think someone should not care if i call him he, as i provided something that proves he has continually had this amateur ability to voice act. i do not think i am some sort of monster or bigot for thinking that FFXIV deserves better. i don't care if a man voices a woman as long as he does a great job doing it.

take for example, Meowth from Pokemon. he was voiced by a man and did an amazing job. he delivered an iconic performance that many children, including myself, grew up to adore and remember fondly. or vice verse, Naruto in the english dub is voiced by a woman! she does a wonderful job and i also look back on that fondly as a great childhood memory.

who is going to be talking about Bryer's performance with nostalgia and delight? it is not a hatemob to assert how poor of a job this has been and how dissapointing it is. we just came off the heels of two very well received expansions, and FFXIV has a good record of trying to please their audience because... well did you see 1.0?

if they're going to insist on this quality going forward they can rest assured that people are going to become detached. they will leave and take their money elsewhere.

I really want to understand one thing:

They really think that validating an individual's every action no matter how amateurish or bad is it, it's helpful in any way?
They really believe cheering on mediocrity achieves anything useful other than inflating an ego instead of pushing them to improve?

That's why the saying "the road to hell is often paved with good intention" exists.

Imagine if there is a young actor, maybe with some talents and a couple of small success. Then suddenly out of nowhere, for one reason or another they are given the main role - in one of the biggest play of the year - on one of the biggest stage of Broadway ... It was never the question of what was the reason they got the role, there were only one possible outcome. Whoever behind that decision, they didn't give the actor an opportunity, they didn't help the actor. They were basically throw the sheep out to be slaughtered ... and I don't think anyone can even blame the wolves.

It's the same thing here. For almost a decade FF14 is one of the best English voiced game on the market, and the vocals have always been one of its strongest point. Giving the main role to a relatively in-experience VA is like ... putting a young singer in the middle of a Taylor Swift's show and hope they will match or even outperform Swift ... the hell they think gonna happen? Action has consequence.

And when it rains, it pours. Couple with the facts that this is one of the weakest story in the franchise, and the character turned out to be probably the least popular character who also given a ridiculous amount of screen time and exposure ... and you just had a perfect storm where anything that could go wrong ... went wrong.

I wonder whoever decided to cast Sena into the role of WL had any idea how badly written the character was ... and whether their decision would change had they known?

i honestly almost feel bad for him until i remember everything he says on twitter lol. like i honestly think he did a good job voicing the little NPCs in Hearthstone, if you have seen his VO reel on Youtube/his website. i thought that it was cute and fit the cards well. like he does well enough on smaller projects, i just do agree it was a total miscast here. maybe he could have done something like voice a pelupelu? i dunno.

I'll say this one more time and as clear as I can.

I don't think Sena Bryer did a great job as Wuk. I'm not sure if it was due to her ability as a voice actress, or due to her trying to sound more feminine combined with an accent (she's admitted the difficulties of that herself), or if more of the blame falls on the writing and voice director, but at best, I think Wuk's voice acting was very average.

I also think that Sena Bryer is a human, and my belief system tells me to try to love and understand everyone, especially those that are minorities and have more struggles than most. That is why I call out the obviously hate filled comments that are purposely using "HIM" just to belittle Sena.

The vast majority of people calling out transphobic comments in this thread are singling out outright hate comments. I've seen only one poster that was seemingly taking any criticism at all towards Sena's voice acting as transphobic, and they were rightly called out on it.

Again, calling out the voice acting is one thing. Mixing transphobic comments just muddies the water and makes it impossible to have an actual discussion about the issues with Wuk's character.

i have a respect for others as well, but i think it is more on the individual when reading what i write to determine falsely that i am just seething and dripping venom at every drop of the word "he".

the only thing i will touch on in this regard, and never again, is i am schizoaffective. to me, and this is my opinion and i don't mind if someone disagrees, it is as if someone were to tell me when i hear and see things that they are real. and to me i find that extremely disrespectful. i prefer to be told the truth.

in my honest heart of hearts i do not come here with any sort of hatred. i have complete ambivalence and was disappointed in a total miscast in a game that has had and hopefully will continue to have strong english voice acting.

I’ve listened to Wuk in every language, and all of them are far superior to the English VA. The performance was tolerable in the beginning and declined throughout the expansion until I also had to change the language. I hope SE doesn’t allow this to happen again.

I said I liked her voice, and yes on the first half of DT, in chill dialogue she was doing alright, even good on some parts. So no I am not pretending anything.
And yes it became bad after that and I said it. Yes it was very annoying sometimes and SE should do something about it because it worsen the experience.

So what I said do not lessen or invalidate the criticism about the acting. But are you pretending not seeing all the hate there is here ?
