Trying to download update & client is freezing.

I've been playing since launch and never really had any problems updating before, but it's not working at all now. When I try to open FFXIV the music starts playing, I get the Preparing to Download - Checking Version - Initializing Network messages, and then it just sits there until I Ctrl-Alt-Del out of it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hmm... it's possible this is a connection problem. But if you have to cntrl+alt+delete out of it, that means something else may be at work.

In either case, start with the basics.

Restart your computer
Restart your modem

Are you connecting over a wireless router? Did you change anything in your network topology? You may need to open some ports to get the download to go through.

When you load it up, are you able to see the files pop up in the patch/meta info folders showing it's trying to create them? If not, it could be a permission issue, in which case try right clicking the usual shortcut and selecting Run as Administrator (even if you're logged in as one).

If you still get nothing, is it worth reinstalling to see if it can be replicated? Aside from changing the game.ver date, I'm not 100%.

I took Grit's advice and restarted the modem & router, and that seemed to help. I still had to force-quit about 15 times because it would only download 5%-10% before freezing again, but it slowly worked its way to 100%. Thanks for the help. CRISIS AVERTED.

Its my experience than unless the downloader is the active window, it slows down to a crawl, and eventually a dead stop. As long as you keep the downloader in the front, its blazing fast. Its silly, because in order to download the updates in a minute or two, I have to use my laptop for web browsing, else it takes hours.
