Hey, Bro. Person that said exactly that here. THAT'S THE POINT. The VA not only does NOT have a Puerto Rican accent, they're making up a completely random one that vaguely sounds like Brazilllian portuguese...if it was spoken in a VERY racist affectation similar to how you might imagine someone very racist voicing, say, a chinese character. Think South Park, but played 100% straight. /That/ is the point being made. It does not work one way or the other, and it is genuinely offensive.

That is new information to me, and if so, then I am on the wrong side of this. Still useful though, because if I was under the mistaken impression that they were trying to legitimately replicate their father's accent, then so may many other people have been, and this little exchange has lead to much clarification.

Ah. Fair enough, then. I do apologize for my agressive tone, that being the case. Truth be told, I genuinely wasn't expecting to be this upset at the poor representation of latino accents - I never really cared about these things and shrugged it off. But having an expansion that explicitly says that they will do it and do it right, but instead it's just a bunch of americans that never even lived in south american soil... - oofh. It hurts, man. Oh, I am not a native English speaker either, and having heard Hollywood butcher not just our accents but having US actors speak mangled phrases that are completely grammatically broken, I understand the feeling. Let's say that we occupy a niche where as far as the majority of Hollywood representation is concerned, our only reason for being is to sell drugs, weapons, or art, act in adult film, or look very stern while sailing large wooden boats.

I still find it quite weird that many people are so attached to the concept of "representation" and so on. This is a game based on a fantasy world, nothing is real, and we should treat it as such. If there is a "representation", cool, it's like an easter egg or something, but shouldn't be forced on the devs or to be expected or something. Also, by the "representation" logic, shouldn't Japanese or German VA be from South American ancestry as well? How long should and what length that ancestry be? Should the rule "One-drop rule" be considered? In my opinion, forcing something to represent something is kinda weirdly offensive and racist to me, like, imagine if there's a location "representing" Southeast Asia and all NPCs speak in broken English with an accent those Hollywood actors used to do when playing an Asian character in 40s or 70s.

I think so, in the JP dub, they all speak modern/Tokyo japanese, maybe the occasional Kansai

That is fair, but the complaint should then at least be that she does a bad fake Puerto Rican, not a bad fake Portuguese. I am not saying there is not a legitimate concern, but people complaining about the wrong thing wasn't helping.

I think it's worth being said in general that the devs seem to be inspired based on vibes. So the architecture, the clothing, the accents, whatever are all going to derived from various inspirations and perhaps modified for XIV. I think people laying claim to the xpac based on their country or whatever is indeed a bit strange. The xpac isn't all based on one small real world location.

That said, I think faking accents is kind of dumb when there's probably plenty of actors they could have employed. Maybe it's a cost thing, I'm unsure. I don't know why in 2024 it's hard to just hire people who are the role. The Sena situation just barely gets out of being disrespectful from me since the heritage is technically there. So then you're getting into a discussion about whether or not she pulled off whoever she is inspired by.kinda hard to tell.

I.e. sena says "Well I have family from Puerto Rico and I was inspired by them". Well ok I guess....still not the best choice, imo.
