Dawntrail is the first expansion where I started skipping cutscenes. The story is bad

are you for real? Getting all whiny and upset because you aren't the center of attention 24/7? You know the character we are is supposed be mentoring others, right? We have been to the edge of the universe and back, we are taking a goddamn step back and fostering the souls of others. Everyone around could tell we shouldn't be messed with. If that makes you want to quit playing then bye bye. No one will miss you. You've honestly missed the point of the story from the very beginning of the game.

What mentoring do we do? We don't coach Wuk Lmao or train her. We kinda just stand there and watch her the whole expansion. None of her power is gained from us, but rather a random power spike in Yak Tel. We are a glorified NPC bodyguard to an annoying nepo baby.

If you removed the WoL from the story, nothing would change. You could swap us out for Y'shtola or Estinien and the story would be identical. That is the problem.

Also (imo) purposefully cultivating a game where a gigantic portion of the player base is attached to their own character after 10+ years and then effectively Thanos snapping their characters out of the narrative is certainly a choice.

It would be more honest if they forced us to create a new character for this ‘brand new adventure’, where there at least could be an excuse why no prior knowledge is used to solve the Endless problem and our character is dumb and invisible. But eating the cake and having it is very strong here.

I didn't skip the cutscenes originally but on my second character naturally I am. It's lead to some funny moments like being in front of a train ready to board, and then teleporting back to the main city with Wut Lamat's dad dead on the floor. All in one cutscene. Talk about a tonal shift.

Having now finished the story + done all side quests in DT can safely say that , yeah , in 1 expansion they managed to completely alienate me from my WoL I've had for 9 years with their combined effort of completely stripping me of the facial features I had that made him what he was for all that time with the graphic update AND with the terrible choices they forced on me for the entirety of the expansion lmao. FFXIV was the first mmorpg that really compelled me to care for my character that deeply since unlike every other mmorpg they actually had you as the tether to all the characters and the world itself and for whatever reason threw that out the window completely this time. Being Wuk's lackey made me feel like I was going through WoW again where I was just the grunt for whichever world leader had the center stage at the time and it was just odd to experience in this game after a decade.

Only excitement I ever had the whole time was getting to see the Cornservant pop up with a quest in a new area. At least he cared for me when nobody else seemed to LOL.

I started feeling this when in the 6.x patches when my WoL was brainwashed of every single person and quest I was involved with concerning the void/13th shard and was just there staring blank like a clown for most of it. Sad to see it applied for the entirety of DT aswell.

I feel like this "your a mentor now!" thing is just cope written by insane people trying to do the writer's jobs for them.

Looks like you completely missed what happened to all of the characters in DT in the presence of the black hole that was Wuk Lamat.

I was already an occasional player for some time, coming back from time to time for the expansions and some friends that still play this game. I enjoyed all the past expansions , they all had some weaker moments along the road but were still pretty good and enjoyable, but with DT I had really to force myself to go through this poor written story. I read a lot of discussions about Wuk Lamat, but her character is just a consequence of this poor writing quality, even the older characters are just shadows of themselves.
