Remember the scene in the benchmark where your character pulls out a map and compass before hopping on their chocobo with a destination in mind? Yeah, I wanted that kind of adventure, but the benchmark apparently lied to me and stuck me to the hip of an overly obnoxious orange cat. The closest I got to that adventure I wanted was when we visited Xak Tural for the first time and got to see not-Texas.

Best part of the story tbh, until the story started asking "where's wuk lamat?" and had to get us back to her again

It's why it really bugs me when someone starts proclaiming "well of course it's not about you, it's Wuk Lamats story!" We were never told this stuff beforehand, the expansion promotional materials, the benchmarks, cinematics, advertisements, etc. primarily showed the Warrior of Light. Even SB gave Lyse more spotlight in the promotional material, opening cinematic, and even being in the front of the expansions logo to signify how important she was to that part of the story. Love or hate Lyse, we expected her to be important and to likely share the spotlight every now and then. Wuk Lamat "being the main character" came out of left field, and she's just not a compelling or likeable character, and telling me that she was always supposed to be the main character feels like either gaslighting or false advertisement.

Yeah it's almost like a bet or challenge took place. Someone took a list of "How to make your audience hate a character", diligently checked every single point except for "have them kill a puppy" and handed the result to the marketing team, saying "Good luck".

So.. I am through now.

My first impressions did not change at all.
All in all I like DT but there are some big problems for me.

A minor problem is the really bad German voice acting. In the 4th zone it was so terribly strange that I really had to switch
to japanese original voices because I could no longer take anything seriously.

I also don't like how Dawntrail was announced, and then suddenly Wuk Lamat is the main character the whole time, instead of our WoL.
Call me egocentric but when I play a game I want to be the main character. When I don't care about it then I watch a movie/series.

In my personal opinion this is the biggest problem of DT. Our true main character suddenly is pushed to the side,
while we have to watch what Wuk Lamat is is doing. They did not find a good balance for their idea of the mentor role.

I personlly also don't liked it that we get forced to change the last zone from 'interesting cool look' to ugly.
I really liked it when I arrived there. Now its....a really ugly zone. I don't mean it in a bad way. It's just how I feel about it.

All in all it was fine. But I also think that it had more potential. : 3
For me ShB and EW were better.

The WoL not being the MC is not a big deal, after all we are basically a mute character so since SE kinda wants for the WoL to be mostly an empty canvas for every player to project on it.

The main issue is that our WoL contribution is diminish to ridiculous levels to the point a random adventurer could do our job. Wuk Lamat literally bending the plot and becoming as powerful as the plot need her to be would be fine on a Manderville quest, not on the MSQ, as well as basically not growing at all as a character and everyone catering to her whims and praising her actions like if they were her personal bootlickers.

To that add a bad narrative pacing, padding and filler everywhere, non sensical plot and antagonists that make some Disney ones look Shakesperian and thats the reason why DT reception is mixed at best.

Heavensward is an example how how the MCs were Estinien, Ysaile and Alphinaud and you didnt feel like the WoL was some kind of decorative ornament, or how the narrative could be low stakes and dont be a sub par story, since Heavensward was confined to Ishgard alone, there wasnt some big stakes there and its considered one of the best expansions ever story wise

For something advertized as the vacation expansion, I was disappointed by the lack of fun interactions with the Scions and, you know, actual vacationing.

Or the general lack of friendly competition between the Scions, who use this stakes free situation to test their mettle against each other, as they help their respective Promises to become Dawnservant. Thancred mentions how he has no problem bending Alisaie over his knee should it come to it... and then nothing ever happens. Instead we happen to team up again.

I already teamed up with the Scions for the past 4 expansions. I was looking forward to some friendly competition. This was the one expansion to make it happen and I doubt we'll get the chance again.

This is what I ment with 'not being the MC'. For most stuff we are not needed and are just standing arround doing nothing and watching what Wuk Lamat does.
Us being a mute character is like always, thats right. But this time the player gets a little bit the feeling of being superfluous, because Wuk Lamat is the MC and
all happens arround her actions and not ours.


I basically never try to search a story for plot holes. You'll always find what you're looking for there anyway, not just in FFXIV.
The story was of course not as deep as HW, ShB or EW. But it had it good moments!
