Yeah Zero was edgy but in a way that was actually kinda funny (except for the excessive hat tipping). It was cringe but the good kind of cringe for me.
She was also competent and even though the storytelling was not good at least her backstory made sense to me. I could understand why she was who she was and it was believable enough for me.
Not only did she come out of a war-torn country where she was a normal person who failed. She then had to spend a long time in the void and was later enslaved by Zenos. If those events don't traumatise or emotionally stunt you I don't know what would. To me it was plausible that someone, who had gone through all that, had completely forgotten what connections are and had to relearn basics like trust and friendship.
Sure, they overplayed the typical "power of friendship" tropes (I guess there's just no escaping those in FF's recent content) but the scenes with Jullus felt a lot more grounded and somber and that made them enjoyable for me.
