Jesus reading the comments here is making me dread continuing the story and I'm not even at the halfway point.
How could they drop the ball so hard on this, has this been addressed or acknowledged by the devs at all?

Depends on how JP reacts usually. I don't think devs even care about complaining unless it's JP, even though we are also paying customers.
If a thread on Reddit is to be believed, a good portion of JP isn't very fond of the story. And yes ofc going to address the common argument that is brought up all the time - blah blah blah only people who are dissatisfied complain blah blah blah forums/reddit are haters blah. So? If enough people are upset including people who have liked HW-EW like myself, perhaps there is an issue?
Some comment highlights include:
- The overworld msq is on the level of sidequests. Honestly we should've let the Ascians kill everyone on this continent
- When they said vacation, did they mean including to other games
- Even if it's the starting point for the next 10 year saga did they have to go as far as copying 2.0's slog?
and my personal favorite:
- Yoshida's turtle shirt referred to this, huh?
The Lizard ones are the best. Japanese BBS culture do be like that.If a thread on Reddit is to be believed, a good portion of JP isn't very fond of the story. I hope that's actually true, if it keeps the twisted socio-political themes infecting modern Western entertainment out of FFXIV; however, based on this expansion, that appears to not be the case.

Well I don't want to go down the rabbit hole too much. But you have certain organizations and businesses trying to push the infection into Japan right now.
Example, right now you have certain groups with BRIDGE affiliations creating a school for teaching aspiring Anime creators how to appeal to Western society.
Basically, yes Japan entertainment is under full blown attack trying to get them to conform to what Western groups want. This company is not immune to it
I think it's funny that it's always you people wanting the safe spaces you like to mock.
Indeed, representation isn't important - mainly because "representation" could take many forms, but for some reason people feel only "represented" when only superficial characteristics are involved (sex, gender, skin colour, race etc.) rather than ideals, behaviours, morality and the like.
Representation is irrelevant. Good writing is what's important - and more often than not, the gaming industry as a whole is prioritising the former and forgetting about the latter, hoping that since a character is representing a minority they are also immune to criticism.
The main writer is a failed theatre writer that bankrupted his own business with his "good" writing. It was doomed from the start. Only Ishikawa can salvage this.
