    It should be really simplified, but robust.

    So, say we have core pigments (red blue yellow etc), then some fancy pants materials like “metallic shavings” of “glossy finish”.

    Then I dye my armor some color (let’s say Dalamud Red), and it says:
    This color will use 6 vials of red, 2 vials of black, one vial of blue”.

    Then just make the dyes based on hexadecimal.

    Allow 1 red and 1 blue to replace 2 purples, etc.

    Add in specialties (like I said, fancy pants) for things like sparkles/metallic/color fade or gradient…

    Alternatively just get rid of dye altogether as an item, and make it an NPC like the hair stylist that dyes your gear and allows you to “try out” all the combos and just pay the man to recolor.
