The 2nd Nier sets differentiate themselves between melee and tank by how rolled up the sleeves are.
I think the era of job recognition through armor sets has long since ended

I don't even think it's about job identity, I think Yoshi-P just doesn't like Black Mages in plate armor specifically.
He said the exact same thing in 2016 (near the bottom)
We've had bikini tanks and caster robes for tanks for as long as we've had glamour. Now we've got job icons you can have display next to people's names to show what job they are. Confusion about what job someone is not a valid reason, so it has to be Yoshi-P's personal distaste for it.
It's literally the worst possible excuse ever.
They're worried about breaking role fantasy in a game that already permits plate armor on casters, and robe-gear on tanks. Equally you already have NPCs running around in fending gear, even though they are a tank. It's not really an excuse at all.
I seethed so hard.
It would also be weird to see a tank fighting a God in a bikini.
Meanwhile me as a healer:
The hardest part is finding some sort of armored pants (never did find any). There is a variant that can do this on BLM as well.

Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]
Just to note that the inverse: A Dark Knight (tank) who looks like a caster is even more possible.
And ironically, sometimes you don't even need cosmetic items lol. The Asphodelos fending items are literally robes with pretty minimal plating.
Sometimes I think that YP is ignorant about the glamouring potentials of his own game. Pretty much like once he was about MCH players not being able to double weave at something like 150ms - which was pretty much a basic complaint and really easy to assess.
GNB glam, except everything except the weapon is caster gear.
Thing is I really would like some fending/maiming gear on my PLD glam in particular, If you were able to equip and dye both channels (which you can do now) of the maiming Top from the aglaia raid, it would actually look nice as some "light weight" armor.
I don't like Bulky big shoulder pad armor, But I also don't like Casual Glams, But you practically get forced between the two if you want to play a tank, similar in how Healers are forced to wear robes ect.
Tell me why can people where a fall guys shirt as a tank but not wear some more light weight armor? None of the glam rules make any sense.

~sigh~
In response to this response— everyone keeps fixating on this part of his answer when he stated just seconds later that the team keeps bringing up when and how to open up more options for players. Which is a major change in their stance and indicates more hope for this happening than we've had ever before. Yes, he repeated the Black Mage in plate armor comment again, but he digressed after and said that the team wants to lift restrictions eventually. Indicating that its no longer a hard no. Focus on that and push for it to come sooner, rather than later. Being petty about the Black Mages in plate armor excuse isn't productive, focus on the positive in that it will happen eventually, rather than never like once previously believed and put pressure on them to pursue it ASAP.
