You're almost better off asking why many WoW clones are worse when they come out.

The objective of this game was established long before beta. Tanaka was designing a game targeting casual gamers, taking the new generation MMORPGs as an example. In fact, for all we know, that might not even have been his decision from the beginning - since executives usually have the mindset of expanding into other markets. The release date - for all we know - is likely the same scenario, since SquareEnix probably expected FFXIV to grow like FFXI did. Not to mention, most of the feedback during closed beta was completely different from what we're seeing on these forums. There was no way they could've known over 70 percent of FFXI players would be in on this game.

Tanaka was involved in the development of Final Fantasy 1, 2, and 3. Since Final Fantasy games started to suck more and more since Final Fantasy 4, I strongly support Tanaka's efforts to design something different. I had no issues with this game when it came out other than the performance and controls. I'm willing to bet that if SquareEnix re-released FFXI with updated graphics/interface/controls and abandoned the PS2, people would flock back to that game right away.

Don't say I'm wrong. You all want to go back to FFXI. And I don't blame ANY OF YOU for not doing so because of the interface/controls.

I find it hard to think this game was targeted at casuals. First there's no AH. That makes things quick and easy for people who are trying to buy/sell. Second is crafting, it's too complex overall. Yes combat is easy enough but I dunno.

Plus that still doesn't answer how you could end up with a worse product than FF11. The interface sucked. Combat is tedious. Crafting is epic frustration. Content was missing with little storyline within a city-state and dailies making up most of what you could do. Leveling is too slow overall (I'm anti-levels but still, what the game calls progress is bad).

Aiming at casuals is one thing, but forgetting that even casual gamers like to have fun is another.

there are many definitions of "casuals gamer", and in japan a casual gamer is not necessarily someone that wants an easy game, but simply someone that doesn't have much time to play.
In Japan the monster hunter series (for instance) is considered a casual-friendly series.

That said, one of the biggest problems with FFXIV is that the target userbase wasn't identified clearly enough. There's something for casuals, something that appeals hardcore, something that appeals sandbox lovers... the problem is that all those "somethings" by themselves aren't enough to satisfy fully any of those audiences.
As I stated, trying to make everyone happy will end in big problems basically in every market. It's one of the most widespread and problematic marketing fallacies there are.

SE should have focused on pleasing a more limited customerbase, but pleasing them fully. After that, you can work on spreading your target further by building on the solid base you already have.

Doesn't matter what anyone's opinion of a "casual gamer" is. Whatever SquareEnix called a "casual gamer" is what they were targeting.
