You don't have to be a mentor to help new players if you're worried about any attached stigma. Access to Novice Network does help but isn't necessary.

If you do want to be a mentor, just hide the crown if you're worried about it. You don't need to have it displayed unless you're doing Mentor Roulette.

Never seen that happen. Sometimes mentors don't know the fight, so I or another mentor just teach it and we clear. After all, mentors usually know how fights in this game work so you can just say "it's like this mech in this recent fight" and they get it instantly.

As a mentor you are generally going to stick out more if you are making mistakes. I think it's good to keep in mind that most people may have high expectations of you because of that if you're wanting to become a mentor.

But In general I also think it goes both ways... sometimes people think mentors can just remember everything about every single instance, which is something I can't do after 7000+ hours of the game, Sometimes they're going to make mistakes too and that's fine, aslong as they know the game pretty well and will try to help new players who ask, I think they're doing a decent job.

There once was a time I aspired to be a mentor. Then I actually got into NN on several different Data Centers. No thanks not going to do it. NN annoys the tar out of me.

These days I just try and help out lost looking sprouts when I find them. Genuine sprouts are pretty easy to spot many times. Also not everyone that lost the sprout symbol has everything figured out. Just look for someone that obviously doesn't understand what is going on and jump in to help.

True. I enjoy that aspect of it. I suppose it's a bit like playing a BLM where you can easily lose your stacks. It makes the consequence a bit more if you mess up.

sometimes people think mentors can just remember everything about every single instance
I aim to do exactly that and mostly I do. But rarely I only vaguely remember something, or I've just lost the sense of timing for it and need a pull or few to get it back again. Especially when it's an old savage fight. I can regain all my old habits but it takes some pulls to get them back and dig them out of my memory.

But I know I'm an extreme minority here and probably any other mentor wouldn't remember half of what I do. There are just an awful lot of fights in the game that even mentors that play a lot probably just don't remember, or, didn't play when it was current content and never understood the mechanics.

Yes they do. I've faced my own share of harassment during my mentor roulette endeavors, majority of time was when trying to help players understand the mechanics or simply asking them to stop in the bad. I don't wear the burger king crown, it means nothing on NA/EU since it's just there for decoration.

There's feedback and there's being a jerk. A lot of Mentors I've met seemed to think it's OK to be really aggressive in their "feedback" and they bullied new players into leaving the instance. Apparently a lot of people can't tell when they're overdoing it. Every time someone here on the forums complains how "nobody wants feedback anymore", it turns out they were just being nasty and got called out for it.

Does that stigma still exist? Do most mentors hide their mentor status most of time? Would be nice to be able to help new players, but not sure the mentor system really makes that possible.
Most mentors don't deserve to be mentors but like it because it is a gold crown they can put next to their name. Also using current year words to describe a stereotype is so hot right now.
