I'm pretty sure I've directly tested that claim before and materia has no effect on the portrait.
It may be that they're so prone to failing that people blame it on the materia change, but it's actually something else.
I just tested this myself and can confirm that adding/removing materia does not impact the portrait. I didn't bother hitting the "Update Gear Set" button either.
There was a point where adding or extracting materia did cause the portrait to error. Adding materia no longer causes the error so that was probably fixed in an undocumented change sometime in 6.5 (or might have been buried in Resolved Issues in patch notes that people usually don't read unless they've been told an issue is going to be fixed).
I don't know if extraction still causes an error but I would hope that was fixed at the same time. With luck, it truly is only the model information being saved now.
I'll have to go back to playing with Portraits to see if it's worth paying more attention to them again.
Which is what many of us had been doing. Change gear item, apply glamour plate, then click update gear. Portraits would still error unless we also went into to Portrait edit to resave it.
Now the Portrait seems to be fine as long as the same Glamour Plate is applied to gear.
