The only thing that's going to make people happy in this case is being given an instanced mansion that never goes away ever. That's literally all I see, people complaining they can't get a house but there are smalls sitting abandoned.

For the people offering solutions, save your breath. The only acceptable outcome is instanced housing with everyone having their own mansion.

That's just your opinion. While housing could be improved in many ways, for me an acceptable solution is to leave it as it is -- after opening up the remaining wards on Dynamis.

The fact that the remaining wards on Dynamis are not open yet says something about SE's perception of the need for more housing. Yeah, I know, people don't want to move their characters to another world just to own a house.
SE may interpret that as indicating that housing is not a high priority for almost all the people who don't yet own a house.
    And they may be right.

Which is an exaggeration. Not everyone is looking for a mansion.

What most players are looking for is a house on their main character's server. They don't want to have to move their character to another world just for a house.

I would mostly agree with that the complaints are coming from players that want a house but don't see it as a high priority.

If someone wanted a house that much, they would move to where the houses are available. Data center travel is a lot more convenient than most want to think (though it will be a problem the first week or two of Dawntrail launch due to general congestion when players want to return to their home worlds) and most players are already taking advantage of outside communications apps such as Discord to talk with their friends whether they're in game or not.

But player dissatisfaction goes beyond whether or not they can get any house. There are still the factors of location and size. Getting everyone a small is not going to stop the complaints from those who want a medium or large. There are things that can be done in a large that can't be done with a small.

A good instanced system would have addressed size, location and availability issues from the start. Those who are using housing as a prestige system could still have the prestige by using a detailed decorating style even if they couldn't fall back on "I got lucky and own a LB 41 and you don't". It's usually not the size that impresses other players. It's what has been done with the space the player has that impresses. No one is going "wow you have an empty large, I'm so jealous". They're going "you have an empty large, what a waste of potential".

The main complaint I personally see is that there's too much competition for mansions/"prime plots" which is causing a false sense of a housing shortage. People say: "There's no houses available." when they actually mean "The plots I want aren't available." and scream for a fix. But there are literally thousands of houses available in the game still, Dynamis holding the bulk but there are still 100+ on most of the other servers.

Why do small houses sit abandoned or only have a couple of bids?
Why do 200+ people fight over a mansion instead of taking an easy win and upgrading later?

People want what they want and won't take less, that's all I've learned from threads like this when I've even offered the solution of finding something reasonable to acquire on servers outside of Dynamis (I won my small private 50/50 on Crystal in my first week). They say:

"Why should I take a small when I want a medium or a large?"
"It's a video game, I should be able to get whatever I want."

Taking Midgardsormr on Aether, for example:
On Paissa, there are several small privates up for bid right now. I've counted 10-15 so far that have 3 bids or less on them, creating a pretty good shot at getting a house (especially if you slide in to the ones that only have 1 bid currently).

Meanwhile, there are two larges that have over 100 bids each, with one having over 200 bids.

It seems people would rather fight over a 200 bid mansion, which doesn't make sense to me. Why not just get something you have good odds on and then fight for your mansion afterwards? At least you have a house.
    ----

As far as opening wards on Dyna:

They should open them up tbh...and then we can watch as people start complaining that there's a shortage again as soon as they lose their bid on the plots they want there. It's a never-ending cycle that won't stop unless people learn to compromise on what they want or Square opens up instanced housing.

To be fair, the majority of those fighting over the large are probably already owners trying to relocate. Very few of those bids are likely to be coming from players that are houseless.

That's one problem with the system - we can't tell who is a new buyer and who is a relocator. That makes a lot of players feel like the "homeless crisis" is bigger than it really is.

Those dozen houses with 3 or fewer bids are a far more accurate representation of just how many players on that world are still trying to get their first house.

As for Dynamis, I'm fairly certain those wards will end up opening by Dawntrail launch to give the new Xbox players a chance at a better selection of houses. It makes sense to hold off until the new players have had time to meet purchase requirements and earn sufficient gil to purchase at least a small if not medium or large.
