Sure, but in FFXIV, the game we are talking about, fishing takes less than 10 seconds per fish, which provides no time to "sit back, wait, and relax". It requires near constant focus to roll an RNG check over and over and over.
Depends on what type of fishing in game you're doing.
Big fishing per example. You slap the most common fish and then ignore any bite that isn't the right one. You can tell what one is the right one based off the tug as well as the time passed since you casted. You can totally relax doing that.
Ocean fishing though, yeah that requires more attention for what fish to use skills on.
Spearfishing too you're right.
Any other fishing is pretty low attention unless you're looking for a specific fish. Then it's just the same as big fishing at that point.
No? at BEST you need to be constantly watching and listening and pressing a button every couple seconds, even if you're big fishing like that and you just ignore wrong bites (which is arguably inefficient but not the point) you need toDepends on what type of fishing in game you're doing.

1. Pay attention to the specific fish you caught, which if you want to be actually efficient involves paying attention to the specific timing window between cast and bite
and 2. constantly up any buffs you need AND throw your rod out every couple seconds every time you ignore a bite
So not reeling in the wrong bite is actually the most efficient way. It takes less time to miss a fish compared to reeling it in. And more casts means more chances during the big fish window. Also when you don't catch anything, your buffs stay up (unless you're chumming each cast or going for a mooch fish). No? at BEST you need to be constantly watching and listening and pressing a button every couple seconds, even if you're big fishing like that and you just ignore wrong bites (which is arguably inefficient but not the point) you need to

The majority of the time, big fish are from !!! tugs and those have a different audio queue.
Any other type of bites, I just use a casting macro so there's always a timer going on in my chat.
Pressing cast every few seconds is very low effort and doesn't require anywhere near my full attention.

To add to this, if you play on controller theres a setting where you can make it vibrate when the fish hits your line. If youre "just fishing", you can do it with the game tabbed out/tv off and not miss a thing. Ditto for big fish targeting that Thurmnmumn describes, cause the !!! has a different vibration than a ! or !!.
Player
A minigame so boring you can play it purely by just looking at your chat window and sounds/vibrations, and yet the fish bite so fast that it can't ever be relaxing, all the pools have a super common early fish that keeps ringing your ears with bing bing bing, all its just missing the wahoo. Sloppy contradicting design.

Lot of folks have timer macros as well.
So engaging!
Veteran healers don't care if we need to heal, but right now we don't. We want interesting things to do during the downtime other than a 30s dot and a single filler spell that hasn't changed from lvl 4 to lvl 90.
Dead DPS do no DPS. Raised DPS do 25/50% lower DPS. Do the mechanics and don't stand in bad stuff.
Other games expect basic competence, FFXIV is pleasantly surprised by it. Other games have toxic elitism. FFXIV has toxic casualism.[/LIST]

FSH should get a Dynamite ability at 100 that produces a random number of fish at that location, further randomized by % of which fish are gained based on the difficulties/number of fish types/etc, and will fill log entries but none of the fish give a size score, none are collectable, they can't be sold on the MB, and none can be used in aquariums or imprinted on canvases. Probably the easiest way would be to assign them a new flag like collectable, but call it "blasted" instead.
