Mmm, yummy wall candy.

I thought that the voice acting was flat, 2/5 suff at the best.
And then I learned that she was trans.
And then I saw the s#itstorm brewing in horizon.
(And then I saw some very stupid tweets by the actor, but I wanna keep that away from this discussion, BUT I would have stayed happier had I not seen her writing her less than classy opinions about stuff...)
The VA was announced early and had to take the announcement down. There were no complaints from then until there was an in-game voice. The threads on this only started when there was in-game dialog for the character.
I liked her voice. Listened to the video that compared them in all the languages. They all sounded okay, although the German and French sounded the weirdest to me since I speak neither language.
I did feel that the voices all felt a little off from all the actors this patch, though, like everyone else said. That's not on the VAs, that's on the voice acting director not telling them the context of their scenes or providing them the intended emotions the game is trying to evoke. Great actors end up coming off very bad when they have poor direction, as many Hollywood stars have shown over and over again (See: Every actor in Twilight. )
IDK she sounded just fine to me. Her performance was fun and energetic and charming. I don't think its really in the cards to get her replaced now anyways.
People know Sena was the VA for weeks before 6.55, so yeah, the complaints all started after people heard the voice, which would be after it was revealed that she is trans. Hildibrand puts you to shame.
These same people are only defending the VA because she's trans. They don't want to talk about the quality of the voice work because they know it's bad too, lol.
I think that that's only a small section of people. Obviously people are tribalistic, and if they see someone who belongs to the same identity as them, they'll wanna defend them.
I have two theories about the lion's share of people defending this performance. For one, there's just a culture nowadays that you're not allowed to criticize VAs, and you MUST tell them they're amazing. It happened with Ada's VA from RE4 Remake. She gave a horrible performance, and got harassed over it, so everyone had to pretend that she was actually the best VA ever because any slight criticism just leaves you lumped in with the harassers. The fallout of that has spilled over into the industry as a whole. And on the other hand, your average consumer just cannot wrap their head around what makes things good. It's the reason Call of Duty continues to be one of the best selling series of all time, or why Marvel Cape-shit has topped the box office for the past 10 years. The average person sees a thing they like and just default to everything about it being amazing 10/10. "What do you mean EW had issues with it's writing? It's from FFXIV! It was the best writing yet! What do you mean the EW savage content was a downgrade from past savages? It's part of FFXIV! It has to be good! What do you mean this VA gave a poor performance? She's voicing in FFXIV, it has to be an amazing performance!"
