People love to take the word "classic" out of context. Just because something is old, it doesn't make it classic. Pictomancer in particular revolves around a trope where the user uses art, images, lines in the sand, dolls etc. to attack. It goes back a long way and has been in literature, screenplays, comic books/manga, and anime. Much like the majority of FF jobs even dating back to the original FF, their concepts are anything but original.
Classic jobs in FF are jobs taken from existing concepts and successfully made them their own. Black Mage, White Mage, Red Mage, Warrior, Ninja, Thief are all classic. Not only are they old, but they are also well established fan favorites in the franchise. It's difficult to say if Pictomancer qualifies as a classic FF job. I wouldn't even say it's been in multiple games. It's most notable utilization was in FFVI, and when I played that game when I was still a kid, no one I knew who also played it used the term "Pictomancer" to refer to Remy. She was popular though because a lot of kids love to draw and paint, so the fact that Remy was a respectable magic user and did those things naturally made players gravitate to her. She was also super adorable.
Knockoffs are new jobs that take a classic job from FF's rolodex and slap a new name on it. Viper heavily draws from Zidane of FFIX who is a THF. DRK in FFXIV are DRK's in name alone. They are nothing like the DRKs of eld, that would be the RPRs. SGE is something actually quite innovative inspired by Gundam, but they just slapped the name "Sage" on it because, reasons. NIN combines concepts of two FF classic jobs of NIN and THF instead of making THF a true job of its own, which I'm willing to bet Viper will do.
IOW, the job system of FFXIV is jumbled up mess. There is nothing consistent about it. In trying to pay homage to classic jobs while also coming up with concepts of their own, the think-tank has become an arena of bumper cars.
