Tell me you're projecting without telling me you're projecting:What many posters actually want—but will not say—is for game difficultly to be exactly calibrated to allow them to clear content but to prevent the maximum number of other players from doing so. This allows them to be counted amongst the elite but for that elite group to be as small as possible while still including them. There's also the phenomenon of people talking big on forums whether or not they have to skill to back it up in-game.

Not true for me, personally. I just want the mechanics to actually matter ie. I would be fine if the maximum difficulty level was Extreme level. What many posters actually want—but will not say—is for game difficultly to be exactly calibrated to allow them to clear content but to prevent the maximum number of other players from doing so. There's also the phenomenon of people talking big on forums whether or not they have to skill to back it up in-game.
For example, in the normal versions, something like a raid-wide doesn't require any mit, tank busters at worst, at minimum item level, would not matter if you so much as use a food buff. The mechanics are afraid to make you dance much ie. second attack to immediately follow the first. The normal versions of most content are just flat out not satisfying.
But at least in the extreme versions you can get things like tank swaps thus forcing the mit to matter, wipes to raid-wides due to lack of mit, mechanics with teeth that aren't afraid to one-shot. Everything isn't telegraphed with orange. And the clear rates are high!
All the savage versions could be designed the same difficulty as extreme and that would be fine with me too. But they aren't quite, so it's just how it is.

I'm starting to believe that the forums are actually a total joke. The amount of times someone goes into a discussion thread and says "You don't actually want X, what you really want is Y, you just won't say you want Y!" is staggering.
To be fair, they're not always wrong. There are some people that will admit, when push comes to shove, that they legitimately don't want other people clearing content who they have decided don't deserve to clear it. There probably ARE other people who think that but won't say it because they realize how bad it sounds and how it would make them look like a bad person.
...not everyone, though. But probably more than a few.

Where are they though? Mr Projection above specifically stated 'Many posters' and yet I just don't see it, doubly wild when you consider the company I've kept over the years playing this game.To be fair, they're not always wrong. This isn't even a new form of paranoia tbh. I forget if I've mentioned it before, one thing that always tickled me back in ARR was helping with the public Titan HM carry linkshells and routinely seeing people complaining, griping and generally throwing odd accusations at the team selling Titan clears, not realising that I was a regular member of those teams as well
It was... strange....
As you say yourself. *Probably* is the key word here, I'm sure there's going to be some meme kiddy with the mentality fresh off 4chan that thinks that. But tarnishing others with that brush isn't really fair now, at least not those that are spending/wasting their time here.

What’s wrong with taking pride and enjoyment in something you’ve earned and the memories you have from getting there?

reject 'The <X> Legend', embrace 'Big Fish'
At least, until 6.55 gives us 'Bigger Fish' or whatever it'll be
