Doesn't really matter I only ever unlocked crystal towers raids and the Nier raids. Now I have the Island to pass time on again leveling it up and collecting all the new mats.
This change fixed nothing while adding the problem of overlevelled players being unable to queue and participate in the content, which is something FFXIV was known to not do.
It very much fixed something. Whether you think it's important or not is up to you, but to say it fixed nothing is just objectively untrue.
But did the fix have the impact that players wanted, or will they still end up in CT the majority of the time?
Until the player base collects the information about the new rewards versus time in duty, a lot will continue queueing in with only CT unlocked regardless of their job level and gear. If the increased rewards are not better for the time invested, few are going to bother to unlock the other Alliance raids.
My guess is the ilv fix will only filter in raids that new players actually can do, rather than have it be free form. Because when we had the previous rule, endgame players had to contend with both new players queuing up raids via DF AND players manipulating the system with alliance roulette. But did the fix have the impact that players wanted, or will they still end up in CT the majority of the time?

This basically annexes the later so now alliance raid roulette only filters raids based on people specifically queuing for the raid + whatever rng. So I guess Alliance Raid roulette is now an endgame roulette now which makes sense considering its hefty tomestone rewards.
New players can still queue up for the raids they need via DF. They just cant participate in the roulette anymore unless they manage to buy gear off the MB (oh shoot, this could make some of those sets potentially jack up in price)
Fixing the cheese is one thing but locking AR strictly based on iLvl is not right: they provide xp boosts of all sorts and it's pretty much impossible to not over level. They should have tied it to MSQ progress as it is impossible to unlock higher level raids before finishing an expansion and the tome gear is also locked behind MSQ. Those raids wouldn't pop anyway. It was added in this patch, in response to feedback that people deliberately reduced their item level to force themselves to get level 50 raids (which are the easiest due to battle system changes and item level growth). Once they enter the raid they equip all their gear again.
This prevents that, but obviously has caused the problem you described for new players who overlevel. One way it could be worked around is to use a different job that is at level 60.
They just made that fix to Wondrous Tails so I am surprised they introduced the old problem in AR.

I'm glad they finally addressed the item level exploit, but clearly it came with a cost. If it's punishing innocent players who are simply overleveled due to the absolutely INSANE amount of xp the MSQ gives, then this was implemented in a very sloppy way.
The system should take into account what expansion the player has actually accessed in MSQ, and if they're even eligible to unlock the Alliance Raids it expects of them.
Honestly, why can you even level above the cap for the current expansion you're in? If you're still in ARR content, there's no reason you should be able to progress past level 50. It has no benefit to you. You don't learn new skills or spells. You don't need to be above 50 to start Heavensward, in fact it expects that you are not. Do better, Square Enix.
I don't think it was a weird solution. It was the solution that any player really knowledgeable about how the game works would come up with. It just didn't take into account overleveling to that degree.
However, OP could simply buy high item level gear from the market board, not queue for it or as I suggested before, switch to a job that isn't max level.
Not true unless they have done an awful lot of side content such as roulettes and taken their time with MSQ meanwhile. You don't overlevel that much if you avoid side content and roulettes and sometimes even run into the problem of not being high enough.most will be Lv 90 by the time they hit the end of HW.
In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

There are a lot of casual players like myself that just enjoy playing and exploring the world, and for us this restriction is a slap in the face. I started my character about 3 years ago when they changed the ARR MSQ line to cut the excessive filler. I'm currently running the post stormblood but pre-shadowbringers arc. In 3 years I've only completed 3 expansions because I enjoy taking my time and seeing the world. I spend more time crafting, gathering, dungeoning, doing dailies, and whatever piques my interest. I'm a completionist and I've been grinding the crafter and gatherer "I found/made" that achievements, hunting all the achievement fates, doing side quests. Furthermore, my main job is warrior and I run that most often for the fast queue times. I reached level 90 around the time I finished the stormblood shinryu finale.
So now I'm being penalized for taking my time by not being able to queue up my favorite job for my dailys. I like to queue up the alliance roulette for irregular tombstone campaigns. I usually got shuffled into one of the ivalice raids on the last campaign. Sure, I can still hard queue a specific raid, but the randomness of the roulette was just as much of the enjoyment as the event and the rewards themselves. Sure, I could just buy some of the Ilvl 610+ crafted gear off the market board, but I take pride in crafting my own gear and wearing a grid of signed items with my name on it. Buying the gear and skipping the grind doesn't provide the same sense of accomplishment. And I like the roulette because I enjoy not knowing what I'm gonna get until I enter the instance and see the opening cinematic playing. I like doing side content and pacing my progress. I don't want to participate in the latest ultimate's or extremes, and don't have the time to commit to joining a raiding linkshell. I play an hour or two when I have some time a couple days of the week. But I still enjoy the time I spend that way. So this new restriction is a real inconvenience me.
I almost never post on the forms. Most people here discuss topics from the mindset of what's best for the game and it's classes and battle systems only taking into account how it would affect end game extremes and ultimates. I bet there are more players than you realize who don't care for that and just want to play a few hours when it's convenient. Forcing us to just buy whatever's on the market board that fits the level quota just to meet an end is extremely irritating and unsatisfying, but the alternative is exclusion from something that I was freely allowed to participate in up till now. Neither of these options feels good.

Had my friend go "see? I still got CT because of new player" and felt like she missed the entirety of the point on ilvl for alliance roulette. Seems many people do.
