He once said F2P wasn't a good business model for content and that the subscription fee is what allows all the content at its current frequency. At the time it seemed like other MMORPGs didn't get updates at the rate of 3.5 months like this game did, not to mention how it is trickled over sub-patches.
They have also said very recently that if the game released today, it would probably be F2P just because that is where the industry has gone, but they keep it the way it currently is because they know they would lose all their current players if they used a F2P model suddenly.
The quantity of jobs has increased to where we have double what we had in ARR. You would think that might require more people to work on them, but there is not just job design to consider, but balance.
The more variables you have the harder it is to balance everything, so to keep the balance at ARR levels it seems that they are making 2 of every job per role play mostly the same with similar potencies.
Another factor is that if one job plays differently from another, people, including on these forums, start complaining that their job is at a disadvantage ie. "Paladin should get a gap closer" (which they did) or "Warrior shouldn't have to spend gauge to use gap closer" (which also got changed) or "DRK should get self-heals" (making it even closer to Warrior). The natural result of these sort of complaints is the very homogenization everyone complains about.
Yoshi-P also gave a specific example of how long it would take to make a Dragoon specification document in the noclip documentary (I don't know if this was a realistic example) but it was 2 hours to create a specification document for Dragoon. Given they have a whole 2 years and a half between 6.0 and 7.0, it's fair to say that a single person has plenty of time to make a document like this, so either they are juggling other tasks as well or they are just making controversial decisions in the specification document.
Given only BLM seems protected, I feel like anyone else on their team other than Yoshi-P maining a job has no impact. But sure, more concentrated focus on a job would be nice, it's just when you consider this one individual has 2 years and a half to do it, it really is a lot of time... I have played all the jobs to level 90 in that time and that was just at the start of the expansion...Plus it increases the chances of having a team member that's actually invested in the job or role
He creates a healthy work environment and forces people to take breaks before they get burned out. He also allows them to shift around roles if they are getting burned out with their current role. This was part of the reason for extending the break between patches from 3.5 months to 4 months plus holidays.
I remember reading he himself started sleeping properly relatively recently (I think he used to do the 4 hour sleep thing which is not healthy). It showed that he was doing that as well.
