Gritty in what sense?

It was portrayed as a world in dire need of adventurers due to how dangerous it was for the average inhabitant to step outside of the safety of settlements. The City States were shown to have deep flaws that brought some grey morality to the table. The Scions did not mindlessly fawn over the player character and even selfishly exploited the player character to advance their cause. There was more in the way of mature/dirty jokes, political intrigue and consequences for the protagonists. Primals were notoriously dangerous due to Tempering and given that there was no cure for it back in those days, anyone Tempered was simply put to the sword as a grim and unfortunate necessity.

Moral greys. Conflicts in scope to which principles are applied rather than solely the overriding principles themselves. Actual warfare. Killed characters staying dead.

We still see echoes of some of that in Eulmore and in Garlemald, but it definitely takes a comparative back seat in ShB and EW.

I'm not really remembering the early XIV experience the same way. If anything I thought the writing was a lot more transparent, and we didn't really get much in the way of "sympathetic villain" until later. Well we had Yotsuyu in StB I guess. Things seemed a lot more black and white "Beast Tribe/Summon/Empire/Theocracy/Ascian Bad!" Lots of one-note speeches especially in ARR.

FF14 and FF16 are VERY different products with VERY different settings. OP just needs to move on and realize that CBU3 isn't going to change this game into FF16 just for him. FF16 mimicked a LOT of the Game of Thrones setting and aesthetics, but most players in FF14 DON'T want that (which is proven by how CBU3 toned down on the politics and dark story after ARR).

Where's your evidence for that? There is STILL a lot of morally grey storylines in ShB and EW. Just because a story has a happier ending than in ARR doesn't mean the morality is black-and-white now. They actually made the game MORE morally grey in ShB and EW. Ascians turned from a generic evil force into a morally complicated faction in ShB and EW.

HOW do you know it's a fan-favorite? A LOT of people were creeped out by it (there were MANY Reddit posts that mentioned how they were DISTURBED by the quest for days). Why did the developers stop making these dark plotlines? Because players don't actually like it.

That seems a far less likely interpretation of what's been written here than --far more as is explicitly written and would more suit the motives of posting it here (where even the XIV devs do not look, let alone green-lighters for CBU3)-- "Here's this thing I thought up. Have a gander, if you like. What, if anything, appeals in it? What conversations can its contrasts with XIV prompt about XIV itself."

He wants to REIMAGINE FF14 and IGNORE all the creativity and hard work poured into our current setting on Etheirys. Why couldn't he have borrowed concepts from FF16 and added it to Etheirys instead of reimagining the entire setting?

The game footage of most of those reviewers actually show gameplay deep into the game, like 20 hours in. YOU need to stop promoting the lie about how they only played an hour. It's UNCALLED for.
