Realistically, what are the odds we'll see an item number increase?

I'm pretty sure if DC Travel didn't exist as it was now Dynamis would have less players than it does now. Not more.

Its easy to point the finger at people who complain about it but live on DC Travel, but a lot of people who went to Dynamis only went there in the first place because DC travel existed and they knew there was an easy out to its population problems.
If cut off or limited dc travel from dynamis, I'd demolish my house and move data centers

You're no doubt correct. What's difficult to say is just how much lower the population would be. Would it be at Materia levels or still somewhat close to what it currently is?

I'm now wondering if the timing of the addition of Dynamis along with the new EU worlds was related to the Xbox announcement and if that ended up being later than they expected. Having the new worlds opened 6-10 months in advance of the Xbox beta would have made more sense than having them open 18-22 months in advance

That's an interesting thought. If I had to guess, I'd say they were expecting server delays to be worse, or to have gone on longer, and ordered them with more lead time than necessary.
