The thing I loved in XI and wished XIV would have is, well a soul. I've thought about this quite a lot being an old long-term XI player and never felt like at home with any other MMORPG. I've come to the conclusion that none of those other games drew me in, they didn't have that special atmosphere, they didn't feel alive or meaningful, they were just games and nothing more, if you know what I mean.

A couple of days ago I decided to watch the XI opening movie again and it still, after all these years, filled me up with feelings and made me want to play that game so badly...too bad it doesn't exist anymore.

Not sure if I had a point, guess I just wanted to share these bittersweet feelings I have about XI.

I'm really looking forward - and at the same time dreading - to see what will come of XIV 2.0. At the moment I enjoy playing the game but I feel it lacks the depth XI had. And that depth is something I wish they would bring from XI to XIV. Those epic storylines (and storyline fights), an interesting world full of life, great challenges, victories and disappointments.

That's it, XI did actually draw you in, and was hard to just walk away from. I actually wanted to see the next CS in most stories, would push through that 5AM window to get that last piece knocked out so I could say "I did this." In XIV I have very little trouble saying "I'll leave it for a few weeks." It doesn't have that "allure/addiction" factor working so much.

I think that's as much an issue within the player community as it is with bleh story/gameplay, the other thing that got me to log in nearly everyday in XI was know there were people that would invariably be looking to do something and they'd love to "drag" me along with them, and I'd have fun, maybe not with what we did so much, but certainly with the people I was doing it with. There's something of that missing here too, perhaps I've just not found the right people yet.

I get all these things from XIV, just as much with XIV in fact because its generally a lot easier to get people do stuff in this game than it was in XI. (kind of odd considering we have such a small player base as well)

Maybe you're just jaded or nostalgic ?

FFXI was my first MMO and it holds a lot of strong memories but much of it is nostalgia, mainly because it was the first time I ever experienced that kind of thing in a video game.

Honestly let Yoshi-P do what he wants to. He doesn't need us to tell him which feature to take from which game. I think that by now he proved himself and showed well enough that he knows what he is doing. When he needs our opinion he just makes a poll and even then polls are needed only when the team can't decide between the options they themselves came up with.

We can cry as much as we want about making this XI-2 or WOW-2, it won't change a thing. Also they have their 2.0 plan already layed out and it is not because they haven't revealed it all to us that we must think that they need us to tell them which features need to be in 2.0.

Not just him... there are people like
Lead Concept Artist Akihiko Yoshida... who's been doing character designs since the Squaresoft SNES days..., all the tactics games... FFXII

Yaeko Sato, who worked on the stories for VIII and XII...

Hiroshi Minagawa is doing the UI... Which is what he did in tactics and XII

Nobuaki Komoto is the lead designer... and guess what he did from 2003 to 2008... Direct the "Golden Years" of FFXI...

Even Yoshi-P's assistant director Shintaro Tamai did the motion and animation stuff for IX, X and Kingdom hearts...

And my favorite member of the staff (Well, tied with Nobuo Uematsu, of course), a man who is up there with the likes of Hironobu Sakaguchi, Hiromichi Tanaka and Koichi Ishii (or as I call them, the original 3)... a man responsible for Attack Time Bar (ATB) first introduced in FFIV.... He did FFIV, FFV ... He directed Chrono trigger and gave us dual-techs (Can you say "Napalm"). He is the man responsible for Wings of the Goddess in FFXI... none other than Akihiko Matsui.
And he is the LEAD BATTLE DESIGNER

This battle system gets beat down so bad by lag... and that man has still made it something special... I can't imagine how much of a challenge it would be to work on the battle system knowing you cant do anything about the lag.
At 2.0 when lag is greatly reduced (I know, I know, fingers crossed), we're fighting with Chocobo's and using battle regimen... I get choked up just thinking about how incredible things will be...

My point is... the developers are a nice mix of people who worked on FFXI and people who had nothing to do with it...
There are people who worked on earlier titles, and people who've never worked on a Final Fantasy title at all....
So the ideas will inevitably come from everywhere... which is good...
With such a well rounded team... Maybe we can learn to compromise... or at the very least, come into this with open minds...

I don't get those feelings exactly because it's so much easier to do everything. I feel no accomplishment in journeying to a distant city. There's little victory in getting your job. No joy in conquering the storyline. It's just too quick and easy.

I think that's part of the issue... People can't separate these things
This game lacking a sense of accomplishment doesn't necessarily have anything to do with FFXI....

So someone comes on and says "It should be harder to level, because FFXI was. And it should have a big sweeping, emotional storyline because FFXI did... And getting to a new city should be a journey and an accomplishment to be proud of..... because it was in FFXI"

And those things are all true... But the thing to understand is those things would still be needed in this game... even if they weren't in FFXI... in fact, someone who never played FFXi could recognize the scattered story, the quick and easy instant gratification leveling... The zones having no real structure.. nothing to move you along to the next place....

All things being said... those are very much needed in this game... but FFXIV needs those things because FFXIV needs those things...

Saying "FFXI had X feature and I'd like to see it in FFXIV" is great
but saying "FFXIV needs X feature BECAUSE it was in FFXI" is just silly

    conversely to the other side...

If an idea is good... its good. If it comes from FFXI and would work well or fit in good with this game, why not use it.
Judge it on it's own merit.

Telling people to go back to FFXI is kind of silly... but telling SE to clone FFXI is just as silly

I know many people aren't saying clone.. they'd just like to see some features... but some of you really are asking for a clone without even knowing...
Its like: "OK... copy my exact face... ok.. now completely copy my brain... hair.... You know what... Copy my torso... I have a good torso... I like my arms too.. copy those.. Might as well copy legs and feet also... but you can do whatever you want with the toes"
At that point you're asking for a clone

In order from least popular to most popular you have:
    1. An unfinished, Laggy game, with no content and glitches/crashes all over the place
    2. FFXI-2
    3. FFXI
    4. A new, innovative FF MMO that appeals to a wider base of players, has tons of content, no lag issues and looks beautiful with fresh new environments and lots to do. A game that borrows from FFXI but is still very much it's own game

FFXIV started at #1.... did horribly so a few people wanted them to turn it into #2..... but there is no reason #4 can't still happen.

Let's be real... WoW did 15 million at peak and sustained over 8-10 million for a long time and yet.... no WoW clone is even doing a tenth of WoW's numbers....
If you want a game to be better than it's predecessor it needs to grow.. to expand.. to change...
    BUT
It needs to learn from the previous installment...
and the original fanbase and the newer fanbase need to come together...
And we all just can't seem to do that

Maybe I need to be on your server ... took me 6hrs to get a party together for the final drg fight, it's a 10 min fight and noone wanted to help ...

I may be jaded, and nostalgic, I'm not however blind or unaware. The people I met in FFXI ran the gamut, from absolute prick to nicest person ever, here there's just a much smaller cross section so the extremes stand out more. I never want to give up the good memories I have from XI, or any of the other MMOs I've played. XI was the longest I stayed in one, I f course saw more, met more people, and have more experiences both good and bad. I'd like very much to say that in 7~8 years FFXIV holds the same types of memories, but in the last ~1yr it has been more diappointment than anything.

Perhaps it's the overall negativity the surrounds the game that makes me feel this way, perhaps I'm just being sucked into the whirlpool of hate and discontent, I'm still looking to the horizon for that silver lining and have no intention of being sucked completely under until well after 2.0. That doesn't mean I have to be all "Yay FFXIV is the best thing ever." Fuck I never said that about XI, or my friends/family/girlfriends for that matter, nothing is ever all good, if it is you gotta stop smoking it ...

Yea I am not looking forward to the four jobs I have yet to do, so can appreciate that, I just hope my LS will help me they are a pretty good bunch lol.

I can see where you are coming from, I will say though for me many of the nosaglic memories I have from 11 weren't until CoP, I mean sure Valkrum was a learning experience alright and running to Jeuno was exciting but the real memorable moments for me was battling my way through the aqueducts against fomors and seeing misreaux coast for the first time and completeing all 3 spires etc was amazing stuff, but as I said before this game is not in a state where they can start giving us that kind of content yet.

Fingers crossed though after 2.0 we will get all that awesome stuff.

"If you want FF XI , then PLAY FF XI!"

You could have just left it at that and just said title^, that sums up about everything I'm thinking towards people that are trying to transform this into an XI clone.
