    Stable income is usualy better than a burst of income. Bursts cause unrealistic standards to be made, and is highly unpredictable.

    Effectively over 10y it doesnt matter if 1 game made 3b in a single year (and then 9y of no income), or 3b in 10 years. But for companies that burst of 3b in a year is often not good. As rarely that 3b will be spend the correct way (it goes to shareholders and not the people working at the company). In most cases a burst of money barely helps a company staying alive, as that money is spend rapidly. While with a more stable income that cannot be done.

    And 10y is long! Its more than enough time for a studio to die by lack of successes. Managers dont like having inactive money in a company, they want new projects to make more money. And yet, upon the first sign of failure (once they have their money) they leave. That is why WoW is such an important game, its basicly an ensurance for the company to keep running. And expansions on that provide the bursts the shareholders want, which also keeps them happy.

    So those numbers that you showed are meaningless. Of the 3.2b of ffxiv you can be sure a big portion went to the actual devs of SE, which for FF7R most likely didnt happen (once made and released, no maintenance is needed anymore - which means any profit there can be used to give to shareholders).

    There is a reason why GTA still doesnt have a new release. Keeping the older games alive and living on its microtransactions (or in ffxiv's case subscriptions) is a lot more beneficial as business model.

    Those numbers show that ffxiv is not this companies most successful game. Looking further into it, using your argument of 1 time vs sustained, we can see that this company also doesn’t just have a single game hitting decent numbers. This is a decently sized publisher making consistent games. So your argument is moot.

    Good news! The Level 15 Foestriker's Tabard is what his outfit appears to have been based on. I'm currently wearing it on my tanks. Play around with different hands and feet and you can get 90% of the way there. Even some of the hair gets pretty close on Hyurs. (We don't have the right tattoo or face paint though.)

    Top 3 grossing revenue for Square developed and produced games are;
    3. Final Fantasy VII & Remake - 2B
    2. FFXIV - 3.2B
    1. Space Invaders 13.9B

    So while FFXIV has made the second most grossing revenue for Square, it is a 13 year old MMO. Compared to the standalones before and after it, that\\'s actually not very good.

    And my source;

    Little confused where they got these numbers from. Are they estimating box sales alone without subs and cosmetics?

    EDIT: Changed "you" to "they" as I saw after scrolling more the vg sales made the estimate.

    Just a follow-up to my previous post - I believe this shows which piece of Digital Entertainment provides the most revenue for SE projects. So MMO sales and sub is about $433 million USD. In sub fees alone, if 500,000 people paid $15 a month for a year, that's only $90 million.

    FFXVI was absolutely worth the wait and has delivered. As for Endwalker, I feel like blaming FF16 for the perceived state of the game isn't entirely fair. Truthfully people had too much hype and hope for Endwalker being the biggest expansion ever which was only fuelled by the WoW exodus during Shadowbringers downtime. By the time the popularity spiked, Endwalker was well in development and the patch cycle content was likely planned. The upcoming expansion is the real test to see if Square Enix will keep delivering at the established pace or try to innovate more now they've wrapped up the first major story arc and have a larger player base.
