When you ignore games like WoW and FFXI you get XIV at launch.
I think it's healthy to look at a game and see what worked, and what didn't, and want the best of that in what's essentially an empty canvas just barely painted at this point with 1.21

Kind of hard not to compare this to FFXI when they used the exact same races.

I would have to agree. As much fun as FFXI was at the time, I do not wish to play the same game. FFXI had alot of great things about it, I'm sorry that it fell to such a low state.
That being said FFXIV is a game to get original ideas going, something not already seen by WoW or FFXI. It annoys me that people would like to impose an idea that has been used in its predecessor. So FFXIV had a horrible launch, we all know FFXI did too, making it into FFXI or going back to its failed concept is not going to give it any more fans or grant any awards.
I always encourage people who bring In new Ideas, this is because I believe FFXIV can actually be something different as far as experience and game play. Patience is also key, there is no way to make things go faster. Whining that the game is taking too long to develop is mute.
The reason I believe people, like me say things like: "Why are you playing?" or "Then go back and play FFXI." Is not because we (using 'we' loosely) hate you or despise you, Its because we all feel the same way about the games future as a stand alone game. If WoW taught the MMO world anything, Its that an original idea goes a long way when successful. The great thing about this game is that the developers are allowing the fresh flow of ideas to reach them. At the same time they are trying to satisfy the more vocal crowd who keep wanting to see more of FFXI, believe it or not. There is only so far that they are willing to go though (LFG icon). Asking for the same game is almost unlikely going to happen, unless the whole FFXIV population would agree.
I would not have put it in such a strong way as the OP did, I still have to agree with his point.

Ahmen, I really wish Abyssea hadn't turned the game into such garbage. XI was and always will be my favorite MMO pre-Abyssea garbage.

KOPUNO!!! <3 never played Abyssea... meh beh you can tell me about it later. I'm kinda curious cuz FFXI was such a good game, I'm surprised that people would be saying it sucks now.

Wish I could, but the FFXI I enjoyed died a long time ago.

This right here. If they didn't want to be compared, they should have made a different game altogether, instead of carrying over so much of the FFXI artwork.
The other posters also have the right of it, people will compare MMOs to MMOs... cuz they are both MMOs.

This somehow reminds me of argumentum ad hominem, although not directly.
Basically, if you see FFXI as something you don't want this game to be, that doesn't mean that everything to do with FFXI will be bad for this game or 'turn it into FFXI-2'. I mean, FFXI had races, so should FFXIV not have races? FFXI had levels, so should FFXIV not have levels? FFXI had monsters, so should FFXIV not have monsters?
That's obviously taking it to extremes, but you get the idea. Just because FFXI has something doesn't mean that having it in FFXIV is going to be a terrible idea. Having ALL of the things from FFXI would be a bit far, but people are only calling for certain aspects, so you can lay down your arms and relax.

So you don't want something about which you know nothing included in something about which you know nothing?
I think I need to go lie down.
