Human beings are also animals, with similar physiologies (heart, lungs, eyes, ears, noses to smell, tongues to taste, etc). One would have to ignore that fact in order to practice the Vegan Way by cutting down Garlean soldiers. What I wish for the developers to do is to change the enemy type on early healer role quests from animals like squirrels or ladybugs to Garlean soldiers or some other type of enemy like that. This would help vegan players be able to play through the story without going against their conscience. Even if it's a virtual space, knowing that I have not killed any animal is peace of mind.
On the other hand, members of society who are allowed to exist within the Black Shroud are taught not to take more from the land than you consume. The Gridanian Way is that of least effect to the environment. Do not waste that which the Elementals allow us to take freely.
Ethical veganism as a belief system is probably never going to make it into this video game. A True Vegan could never become an omni-crafter. Your White Mage may never wear armor that incorporates animal skins (check the recipes, kids!).
Culling trees from the forest becomes an ethical conundrum as you are deliberately removing habitat for a large number of animals, both cute and cuddly as well as the tiny squishy bug types. No staffs or wands made from corrupted tree products should be employed to kill those nasty Garlean soldiers.
And don't even get me started regarding recipes that employ milk or milk products...

Mao eats meats. Titanman......tasty?
Just use Pokemon rules where if you 'kill' something, it's really just fainted.

Ron Swanson would say:
"You've accidentally given me the food that my food eats."
"Give me all the bacon and eggs you have."

But... is garleans an animal?
If you're going to start a thread like this. Then do it properly and at least do it as a 1970's stoner hippy...
