XI was the last FF masterpiece. XI would still be the most profitable FF title if it were not for that XIV WoW rush. The game was one of a kind. This remaster or new release should appeal to adventure/open world/progression enjoyers and XIV should probably stick to its pop culture theme park instanced rides.
They should share a sub. I think everyone would be much happier. They could even share assets but the style of these MMO's would appeal to different crowds and be popular in their respective fields. I'm sure of it.
Free login atm for old players btw.......
Didn't XI do something along the lines of a classic server that provides the gameplay as was during Chains of Promathia or ToAU? Just curious.
Personally speaking, there is nothing XI can do to get me play it or any variation of it. The nostalgia runs too deep, and there isn't anything other than erasing my memory and time traveling that would bring back the same enjoyment I experienced back then. We're talking almost 20 years ago now, sheesh! Such a different time back then with both the mmo genre, as well as myself.
I loved XI back in the day....I would never play that game today.
No, only private servers are offering a "classic" XI experience.Didn't XI do something along the lines of a classic server that provides the gameplay as was during Chains of Promathia or ToAU? Just curious.

"Classic" because they are ultimately still reverse engineered info on things like magic and weaponskill damage calculations. The most popular one right now, its padded numbers notwithstanding, radically altered Job Trait level acquisition, resulting in Thief getting Triple Attack and Dual Wield innately at level 30. This, along with a slew of other changes caused a ridiculous meta within it.
They also had some race to 75 thing where the people seriously doing it were mainly people already in on the creation and maintenance of said private server, so it was rigged from the word go.

"I thought that my invincible power would hold the world captive, leaving me in a freedom undisturbed. Thus night and day I worked at the chain with huge fires and cruel hard strokes. When at last the work was done and the links were complete and unbreakable, I found that it held me in its grip." - Rabindranath Tagore
I remember playing FFXI, I remember the grind of leveling up, and the dubious joy of being KO'd and losing the level.
my tastes have moved on with the times and I no longer find that appealing. some might, but I suspect people who try XI these days with the generally prevailing attitude of a lot of gamers... they'll leave shortly after. not all... but quite a few
Just saw some FFXI HD and XIV UI addons, was tempting to consider trying the game out. Sad the whole rework they had going fell through, the graphics looked interesting. Game certainly is dated, surprised they keep some of the 45 min travel time aspects though lol. I LOVE the boat idea in short practice, like WoW has, but I think someone missing their boat, and forgetting to bring invis / deodorize pots and killing our XP party in FFXI made me go "well this is.. ... not fun". Definitely hard to go back to the combat style.
Loved blue mage in that game, I had hoped they'd try to make FFXIV's more interesting- I feel the more recent spells are doing a better job but.. still wishing they'd give it another pass.

I wanna give some appreciation here - This week I started playing XI for the first time.
I'm blown away - everything about the game is amazing and extremely engaging. I never wanted my hand held in XIV, I never wanted choices made for me, I never wanted my rotations pre-planned, and I sure as hell never wanted a visual novel forcing itself on me for hundreds of hours.
XIV has kinda just felt like a museum of FF, which was OK but difficult to get truly immersed. Mostly feels like I'm watching a movie of FF where they just stole old FF assets and put them in new stories.
XI has challenged me in almost every way possible so far, and it feels like an actual open world Final Fantasy mainline game. It's pulled me directly into a universe of it's own design.
If you've only played XIV like me, but absolutely love FF - Do yourself a favor, push past the initial install/setup woes and experience it. (Use a controller)

I would experiment FFXI if i didnt have an IP block issue =p
https://www.bg-wiki.com/ffxi/Quickstart_1-119_Guide is my recommendation for all new players, there is just so much content that the game won't tell you about unless you know about it.
I do wish that FFXI would share a sub with FFXIV to encourage players to try it out. It really is a fun game and so much can be done solo if you want. I am hoping with FFXI actually winding down and actually going into maintenance mode since the producer is pushing his devs to work on other projects that SE thinks hard about combining subs.
Ok not gonna try to be that guy but its kinda hard to have that awestruck sense of wonder experience in FFXI when you have to follow a leveling and content guide because the game is so archaic than classic WoW in its MMO design.I wanna give some appreciation here - This week I started playing XI for the first time.

At least for me, I enjoy the game when I know what to do next. Doesnt help that plot points from other expansions keep interfering when you travel unlike the digestable linearity of FFXIV' design.
I only love FFXI for its gameplay and music since Im a fan of the old school anyway. But I second the game's recommendation, its an interesting world but please follow a guide
