I'm exactly same like you except in reverse. I've played from Indonesia and now reside in JP.

in my opinion, there is no connection issue at all, don't need VPN either. I cleared savage contents in Indonesia just fine. While you can still feel the ping difference, it is very playable even with Ninja. If in JP you get 60ms, in Indonesia you probably get 120ms.

Now if you bought the game through PSN or Website, I'm not sure if you can transfer the account cross-platform to Steam.
but, if you move back to Indonesia you can keep your JP Steam Store to enable the next DLC purchase. Logging in from Indonesia or charging with IDR steam wallet does not revoke your Japan Steam status. Charging a Subscription through the mogstation with Steam wallet also does not revoke the Japan Steam status and it is completely possible as long as you remain in Yen currency.

I cannot say the same if you use credit card though, never tested it out.

edit : Basically what I did back in Indonesia was that I applied to change my region to JP, and did all the purchases in Mogstore with ￥JP Yen Steam wallet (All steam wallet purchases will be converted to JP currency automatically).

tbh, it's more a stability issue.
Without VPN there will be rubber banding.
